The Seth Crosby House was a square, two-story Federal farmhouse with brick ends that stood on the north side of Manning Road at the Middlesex Turnpike, south-east of Nutting's Pond, until it was torn down in 1974. Seth Crosby (1766-1848), of the fifth generation of the family in Billerica, built it about 1810 on land his family had farmed since the early 1700s. Hazen (1883) placed Seth "south-east of Nutting's pond, on the Middlesex turnpike" and his father Seth "south of Nutting's pond, at the Fiske place", the name the farm carried for most of the 19th century.
The land came from Seth's grandfather William Crosby, "gentleman", whose will of December 31, 1753 left "all my Real Estate in Lands Situate and Lying in Billerica and Bedford" to his sons Jesaniah, Hezekiah and Seth. His inventory of 1754 lists a home place of 25 acres, "the Great peice South of the Barn containing 105 Acres", Bedford land and "a small Lott Joyning to Nuttings Pond"; the will and inventory also record three enslaved people in the household, Jenney, Robin and a boy of thirteen. In 1759 the elder Seth Crosby took from his brothers, as his share, "about thirty seven acres ... with the Barn thereon standing", running "Westerly as the highway goes about one hundred poles" from Hezekiah Crosby's corner on the road toward Bedford, with eight acres of the Rubbish meadow and a fifteen-acre lot on the north side of the road.
On April 23, 1790, the year of his marriage to Mehitable Kittredge, the younger Seth Crosby bought these same 37 acres "with a Barn thereon" from his father for 140 pounds. There was still no house on the land. He added fifteen acres on "a road leading from Lexington road to said Bedford" in 1803, eighteen acres of woodland "on the road South of Nuttings pond" in 1810, a three-acre strip from Jeremiah Blanchard in 1819 and his son Harvey's half of the Nutting Pond lots in 1833. The Middlesex Turnpike was laid out through his land in the first years of the century, and the house, at the corner of the road and the Turnpike, was most likely built just after it; "Open House in Billerica" dates it to 1810. None of these deeds were recorded until October 1849, after his death.
In April 1848 his son Augustus had the court declare Seth Crosby "a non compos mentis person", and he died in June 1848, "leaving no widow". The inventory taken that September values the "Homestead farm about 100 acres" at $3,600 and lists a house with four rooms and four chambers around a central hall, "Cranberries in Garret", a yoke of oxen, five cows and a horse. None of his children stayed on the farm. In November 1849 the heirs (Augustus Crosby of Warner, N.H., Betsey Winship, Kendall Crosby's daughters Elizabeth and Lydia, and John S. Edgerly and Henry Crosby, who held Harvey Crosby's quarter) sold their 116/144 share of "a certain parcel of land with the buildings standing thereon ... containing one hundred and thirty five and three fourths acres" to Nathaniel Critchett of Lowell for $3,320, and the guardian of Kendall Crosby's four minor children sold him the rest at auction for $645.40.
Critchett, whose name is on the 1853 map, was a Lowell man who had overreached: in September 1854 he conveyed "all the real estate" he owned to three Lowell men, Cyril French, George H. Carleton and Royal Southwick, who sold the farm off in lots. On March 27, 1855 they sold the house and the main farm to John Fisk of Bedford for $2,750. The bounds written that year, "beginning on the easterly side of said lot at a point in the road leading to Bedford and at a corner of a wall" and running "across the turnpike 253 feet" to Hannah F. Bowman's wall, were copied into every deed of the farm for the next eighty years. Fisk added an acre by the Turnpike from Leander Crosby in 1883, briefly owned the neighboring Bowman's Tavern stand (1901-1902), and is on the 1875 map; Hazen called the place "the Fiske place".
John Fisk's will (1905) left the farm to his son Merton L. Fisk, who sold it in 1917 to Edward C. and Harriet L. Fogg of Boston, taking back an $8,000 mortgage. The Foggs sold in 1919 to Herbert F. Nelson of Sharon, who sold the same year to James I., Victoria and Aubrey S. McLeod of Marlborough. The McLeods mortgaged it to the Merrimack River Savings Bank in 1920, and in October 1935 the bank sold it at auction on the premises for $4,100 to Valentine O. Martin and Isabella M. Martin, who already owned the old Bowman tavern farm across the Turnpike. Valentine died in January 1936; Isabella kept the land for the rest of her life, and her estate still owned the vacant house when it was recorded for the historical survey in 1973.
The house came down in 1974. In 1980 the family had the corner divided into three lots (Plan Book 132, Plan 36), and in 1983 a Martin heir put Lots 2 and 3, the old house lot, into the Manning Road Realty Trust. The lots passed through private hands and the E & E Realty Trust (1986, 1993) to the JRB Realty Trust in 2015, which built the present house at 11 Manning Road on Lot 2 and sold it in 2016. Stone posts, a large boulder and "the remnants of a stone wall" along Manning Road, named as bounds in the modern deeds, are the last visible traces of the Crosby farm.
