Edward F. Hayes
Edward F. Hayes, known as Eddie, served on the Billerica Recreation Commission for the last three years of his life. He was appointed in September 1989 and reappointed in July 1991 to a term running to 1994, serving under chairman Donald R. Donati alongside Margaret Hannon-Rizza, then the commission's secretary. Those were busy years for the commission, which was reaching out to teenagers with new programs and an Associate Recreation Commission for Teens.
He died on July 30, 1992, while still a member of the commission. The town's memorial list for 1992 named him Edward F. Hayes Sr., while the memorial read at the 1993 spring town meeting named him Edward F. Hayes Jr., crediting him with service to the Recreation Department from 1989 to 1992. The road into the recreation complex on Campbell Road, now the Peggy Hannon-Rizza Recreation Complex, is named Ed Hayes Way.
