Samuel Hill was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, at twenty-five. He was born in Billerica on February 20, 1750, a son of Peter Hill and his second wife Abigail, and a younger brother of Peter Hill. He married Sarah Parker, a daughter of John Parker. Their first child, Sarah, born in March 1774, died on March 5, 1775.
He was one of the Billerica minute-men of 1775, and when the company went into the redoubt on Breed's Hill under Prescott, with Lieutenant Jonathan Stickney in command in the regiment of Colonel Ebenezer Bridge, he was among the Billerica men killed there, with Asa Pollard. The Revolutionary War memorial calls him a corporal; Hazen's list of Billerica soldiers gives him the rank of lieutenant.
His daughter Abigail was born on May 30, 1775, less than three weeks before his death. She married the Rev. Mighill Blood, pastor at Bucksport, Maine. His widow married Samuel Bowers. His gravestone in the Old South Burying Ground records that he was "Killed at Bunker Hill," aged 25 years, 3 months and 14 days.
His name is on the Revolutionary War plaque that the Billerica Historical Society placed on the Meeting House Site Memorial on the Town Common in 2001 (dedicated on October 27 of that year), which names the fourteen Billerica soldiers known to have given their lives in the war.
