David Parker House
The David Parker House stood on the east side of Boston Road about half a mile southeast of the meeting house, on a walled lot of about two acres that ran south toward Tufts Lane. It appears on the 1875 Beers map as "Mrs. L. Burrows", for Louisa E. Burrows, widow of William F. Burrows, but the house was far older. When John Parker and William Tompson sold John Bell, a cooper, twelve acres on the west side of the country road in March 1769, they added "a dwelling House standing on the east side the said Country Road ... which House formerly belonged to David Parker of Billerica." Bell sold it in 1785 to William Bradford of Boston as "almost two acres" with "a Dwelling house thereon", twenty-three poles on the road and "inclosed all round by a stone wall".
For the next half century the house lot went with the twelve or thirteen acres across the road, the land later known as the Gorham farm. It passed from Bradford to William Lambert (1792), Dr. William Wilkins (1795), Jonathan Lawrence (1798), Dudley Walker (1799) and Capt. Benjamin Bowland (1804). After Bowland's death his children's guardian sold both pieces at auction to Jeremiah Blanchard in 1813, and they went on to Simon Forrester of Salem (1814), his son John Forrester and son-in-law Gideon Barstow (1816), Samuel Eames (1826) and John Eames (1829). In 1837 John Eames sold Lory Prentiss, a cordwainer, the two acres "with all the buildings standing thereon" and the land opposite. Prentiss sold the west-side land to John J. Gorham in 1846 and kept the house.
Prentiss sold the house lot in 1848 to Benjamin L. Judkins, who resold it in 1850 to George H. Blanchard, a Boston painter. In 1857 the Blanchards sold "the same estate which my family now occupy as their homestead" to Albert R. Richardson, and three months later Richardson sold it, now "about three acres", to Sylvester S. Hill, a carpenter. Hill added four and a half acres with a barn to the south, reaching Tufts Lane, bought from Sewall Worthley in 1868. On February 6, 1871 he sold both tracts to William F. Burrows for $3,000.
William F. Burrows died within a few years, and his widow kept the homestead; the town abated her taxes in 1883. In 1884 and 1885 six of the seven Burrows heirs, among them William W. Burrows of Three Rivers, Michigan, Cyrus E. Burrows of Brockton and John A. Burrows of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, released their shares of "the homestead of the late William F. Burrows ... about seven acres" to Mary E. Crosby, wife of Frank L. Crosby, for $314.28 each. The Crosbys mortgaged the place several times. In 1896 a creditor had Mrs. Crosby's interest sold by the sheriff, and on November 30, 1896 Jerome Crosby of Winchester sold the property at auction under his mortgage to William H. Anderson of Lowell for $1,700. Anderson and the Crosbys conveyed it in April 1898 to Nathaniel P. Jones, and Jones sold it in 1899 to Grace Lillian Backer, wife of the florist Clarence A. Backer.
The house was then the Backer home, the "Backer & Co." of the 1906 atlas, with the firm's greenhouses beside it. After her husband's death Grace Backer sold the greenhouse lot on the north side to the Bohannons in 1928 (later the Billerica Greenhouses, see Backer's Greenhouses), a lot on Tufts Lane in 1948 and a back lot in 1950. She died about 1964. By June 1969 the remaining road frontage belonged to J. Everett (James E.) Farmer, who made it Lot 2 of Tower Farm Estates when he laid out Tower Road beside it. An office building was put up on the lot about 1971. The estate of Phyllis C. Farmer sold it in 2001, and it has since changed hands among private and business owners.
