Built 1853

When Nashua Rd was relocated about 1830, the old house of the north side of the intersection with Treble Cove Road was put into service as the Winning Tavern. Eventually, a blacksmith shop was needed, and Alexander Dutton came to keep it on the south side. Both the blacksmith shop and his house next south of it are shown onthe 1853 map.

In March 1853, the widow Lucy H. Foster deeded the land to Jane Dutton of Boston for $45. The widow Foster was not a charitable woman, and the best inference is that the land was purchased and a house put up just in time for the 1853 survey.

Alexander was there in 1853 and 1875. His family record is not in Billerica, but his grandson Alexander was born in Billerica in 1866. For many years, his family ran the West Billerica farm of E.J. Hill, Lucy Foster's nephew and heir.
