Ananiah Bohonan House

Built 1852

The Ananiah Bohonan House stood on the south side of the Rangeway Road in the northwest part of Billerica, on a lot of about ten acres between the Spaulding farms and the land of Marshall Preston. The 1852 map labels it "A. Bohonan," and the deeds show that the A. stood for Ananiah Bohonan (1783 to 1859), a shoemaker born in Salisbury, New Hampshire, who built the house between 1839 and 1844 and was the father of Peter B. Bohonan, later the station agent at East Billerica.

The land was part of a 20-acre tract on the southeast side of the road, "the same formerly owned by Samuel Parker," that the widow Betsey Crosby gave her son Oliver Crosby in 1829 along with the Dowse Place across the road. Crosby sold the whole in 1832 to Joseph Manning and Ebenezer Cowdry of Chelmsford, they sold it in 1833 to Lot Easte, a blacksmith, and Easte sold it in 1837 to Otis Lincoln, who built the Otis Lincoln House on the north side of the road.

On December 2, 1839 Ananiah Bohonan, recently remarried to Abby Spaulding, bought two adjoining pieces on the south side of "the Range way road so called": the west part of Lincoln's tract for $125 and two acres on the road from Thomas Spaulding and his son Edward Spaulding for $150. Neither deed mentions a building. The same day he mortgaged the nine acres to Benjamin L. Judkins for $421. By June 17, 1844, when he sold the lot to his son Peter for $500, it held "ten acres more or less with the buildings thereon, where I now live," so the house was built in those years. Peter paid off the Judkins mortgage, but by 1845 he had built his own house on Gray Street in East Billerica, and his father stayed on the Rangeway: the 1850 census lists Ananiah Bohonan, shoemaker, aged 66, with his wife Abi, next to Isaac Brown at the Isaac Brown House, and the 1852 map still shows his name here.

On April 8, 1853 Peter B. Bohonan sold the house and ten acres for $800 to Lydia Brown, wife of Jonas Brown, who held it in her own right and gave him a $500 mortgage for part of the price. In 1863 the Browns mortgaged it for $180 to Stephen P. Wiley, who made an entry to foreclose in July 1878. After Lydia Brown's death her administrator, Dudley Foster, sold the place at auction on April 21, 1879, and Wiley bought it for $625.

Wiley, later of Lowell and Chelmsford, kept it until July 27, 1895, when he deeded it with four other properties to Daniel E. Tuttle of Barnstead, New Hampshire, to hold in trust for him. The same day Tuttle sold the Rangeway lot "with the buildings thereon" for $900 to Julia Nuttall. Her family farmed the adjoining land to the west, and Charles E. Nuttall, a weaver and later a farmer, appears in the directories on the Rangeway road from 1901 to 1921. In 1906 Charles E., John J., William F., Mary E. and Margaret Nuttall, her heirs, sold the ten acres to Anna H. Terry of Lowell, whose husband Charles H. Terry, a wool sorter, is listed on the Rangeway road in 1912.

The house then changed hands often. Anna H. Terry sold it in June 1914 to Mary A. Stevens of Lowell, who sold it that August to Garabhad and Mesrob Echmalian of Lowell. In 1915 they sold it to Joseph and Nellie Stankiwicz of Lowell, who lived there (Joseph Stankiewicz is listed on the Rangeway road in 1917 and 1925). His widow sold it in 1928 to Joseph F. and Jennie Cole of Boston, and they sold it the same year to William A. Newcomb, a farmer, who took in James G. Newcomb as joint owner in 1929. The Newcombs sold in June 1931 to Joseph W. Fryc of Lowell, who resold that August to Frank and Mary Dziurkiewicz; Frank Dziurkiewicz, a tailor, is listed on the Rangeway road in 1942. In 1945 they sold it to Joel E. and Buryal E. Davidson. Every deed in this run describes the same ten acres "with the buildings thereon," bounded by Nuttall, Spaulding and Preston.

After two private sales in the 1950s the land went in 1961 to the Ampolo Construction & Engineering Corporation of Lexington. When that company went bankrupt its trustee sold the ten acres in 1966, and they passed to Anro Realty, Inc., which sold them in 1974 to R & W Realty, Inc. of Cambridge for $5,000. In 2005 R & W Realty had the land divided into three lots (Plan 219-61), the plan marking the old house's site near the road as an "existing foundation (to be razed)." The house was gone by 2010. The two front lots were combined, sold in 2011, and a new Colonial house was built on them that year; it is now used as a rectory.
