The Blodgett Homestead stands on the north side of Andover Road about 200 feet east of Boston Road, directly on the road line. Andover Road was once "Sheldon's Lane," and the house lot is the same half acre that the deeds describe again and again from 1799 to 1840: "about twenty four rods northeast of the meeting house," seven and seven tenths rods on the lane and eleven and one tenth rods deep, with "the line dividing a barn in the middle" on its east side. The saltbox form led the 1973 survey to call it an 18th-century house, but the deeds show that it was built about 1799-1800, and that the Blodgetts who gave it its name came in 1840.
The land was part of the homestead near the Centre that David Osgood, innholder, bought from Thomas Danforth in 1760 and that Osgood's executors sold to Solomon Pollard in 1768 (see the Ensign Jonathan Danforth Jr. House). On July 16, 1799 Pollard sold the half acre on the north side of "Sheldens lane" to Asa Duren, a carpenter, for $200; the deed mentions no buildings. A year later, on July 17, 1800, Duren, now called a housewright, deeded the lot to Joseph Danforth for $300 "with all the buildings thereon standing," and when Danforth gave it back in 1803 Duren at once mortgaged it, "with the buildings thereon," to Josiah Crosby for $500. Duren, who was working as a wheelwright by then, sold the place in two halves to Issachar Andrews in 1806 and 1807 for $1,600 in all.
For the next sixty years the house was a wheelwright's home and shop. Andrews sold it in January 1809 to Crosby, the mortgagee, who resold it three months later for $1,000 to Francis Kidder Jr., a wheelwright from Littleton. Kidder sold it in 1822 to Dr. Zadok Howe, who sold it in 1823 to Nathan Shattuck, wheelwright, each time for $1,050. Shattuck, who had moved to Andover, quitclaimed it in 1837 to Gilman Fletcher, and on Sept. 28, 1840 Fletcher sold "half an acre more or less with the buildings thereon" for $1,200 to Orville M. Blodgett of Bedford, a joiner, subject to a $680 mortgage to Dr. Howe.
Orville M. Blodgett worked here as a wheelwright until his death, without a will, on March 13, 1869. His estate inventory lists the lot of "about one half of an acre, with the Dwelling House, Wheelwright's Shop, and Barn thereon standing," valued at $1,600, and among his goods a lathe, a horse power and stocks of hubs, spokes and felloes. His widow Emeline and his children, Mary Emeline Thompson and Joseph Edwin Blodgett, kept the place undivided until March 25, 1892, when brother and sister divided it by an exchange of deeds. Mary took the western part, 47 feet on the road, "set off with the buildings thereon," with a right to water from the well on her brother's side. Joseph took the eastern part, about 75 feet on the road, with half of the old barn; the old house straddled the new line, and Mary reserved the right for its kitchen to stand on his land for fifteen years and for the eaves of the main house to project over it "so long as the house shall last." A second house was built on his part, the Jennie Blodgett House at 12 Andover Road.
In June 1914, under a license from the Probate Court, Arthur L. Blodgett, as conservator of Mrs. Thompson's property, sold the homestead for $1,100 to Jennie F. Blodgett, and in September 1915 Joseph Edwin Blodgett deeded her the eastern lot as well. Jennie lived in the newer house and rented the old one, which was made into two apartments. On July 30, 1938 she sold the homestead, with a strip of the eastern lot that widened its frontage to 67 1/2 feet, to Chester G. Derry, taking back a $1,450 mortgage and reserving a way "around the Westerly end of the barn and garage" on her remaining land. In July 1944 the lot was put in the names of Chester G. and Esther G. Derry jointly and the right of way "around the barn" was given up. On Jan. 31, 1946 the Derrys sold the house to Gustave N. and Grace Champagne. Gustave Champagne, a barber, kept his shop in the apartment on the west side. A plan of Jennie Blodgett's land drawn by E. P. Simpson in November 1946 shows the Champagne lot of about 8,800 square feet beside her own, and it still serves to describe the lot today.
The owners since the Champagnes have been private individuals. In 1973 the house stood only seven feet from the road, between two business zones, and it remains one of the oldest houses on the approach along Andover Road to the Common. The MACRIS inventory form dates the house to about 1750; the deeds above show it was built later.

Orville M. Blodgett, wheelwright, died intestate March 13, 1869, leaving his widow Emeline H. Blodgett and two children, Mary E. Thompson of Woburn and Joseph E. Blodgett of Billerica. On March 23, 1869 Mary's husband Samuel F. Thompson was appointed administrator with the assent of all parties (bond $3,000). The appraisers (Daniel Floyd, Moses P. Greenwood, Isaac P. Bacon) valued the real estate at $1,600: a "Lot of land containing about one half of an acre, with the Dwelling House, Wheelwright's Shop, and Barn thereon standing situate in Billerica, on the Northerly side of the road leading from the Centre of Billerica to East Billerica"; the personal estate of $735.26 included the furnishings of a store room, parlor, sitting room and dining room and his wheelwright's tools, lathe, horse power, hubs, spokes and felloes. No division was made in probate; the heirs held the lot in common until 1892.

The companion deed of the 1892 division. For one dollar, "a certain tract or parcel of land and buildings thereon, except so much of the dwelling house, the most of which is on the grantor's land and is owned entirely by the grantor, which projects upon the land herein granted including the kitchen," on the north side of the road to Andover formerly Sheldon's Lane, about 322 feet east of the Boston road at the corner of the heirs of the late Col. John Baldwin, running north by the Baldwin heirs "the line dividing the barn in the middle" 188 feet to the Unitarian Parsonage, west 74 1/4 feet, and south by the grantor's share 202 feet to the road. "Being a portion of the same land conveyed to Orville M. Blodgett by Gilman Fletcher" in 1840 (Cambridge Book 397, here miscopied as page 495) and the portion "set off by mutual agreement as the grantee's share." She reserved the right for the kitchen of her house to stand for fifteen years and for the eaves of its main part to project "so long as the house shall last," and conveyed free of her husband's curtesy under a Probate Court decree of Feb. 3, 1892. John Baldwin, running north 188 feet to the Unitarian Parsonage, west 74 1/4 feet, and south "by the land formerly of Mary Emeline Thompson" 202 feet to the road. "Being the same land conveyed to me by said Mary Emeline Thompson by deed recorded ... libro 231, folio 317," subject to the easements reserved in it. "The land in the center of said Billerica with the buildings thereon, situated on the Northerly side of the road to Andover, (formerly called Sheldon's Lane)," beginning at the southeasterly corner of land of Luther W. Faulkner about 200 feet east of the corner of the main road to Boston, 215 feet back by Faulkner and the Unitarian Parsonage, 21 feet by the Parsonage, then 202 feet southerly "by other land of the grantor" and 67 1/2 feet on the street, "reserving to the grantor ... the right to enter the granted premises around the Westerly end of the barn and garage now on the grantor's remaining land," being part of the premises conveyed to her by Joseph Edwin Blodgett in 1915 (Book 544 Page 392) and by the conservator of Mary E. Thompson in 1914 (Book 523 Page 420). Dated July 30, recorded Aug. 1, 1938; Derry gave her back a $1,450 mortgage the same day (Book 915 Page 297). On July 10, 1944 Derry reconveyed the lot to her and she conveyed it to Chester G. and Esther G. Derry as tenants by the entirety, the reserved way "around the barn" being extinguished (Book 1009 Pages 248-249). Later owners are private.

For a consideration "of less than one hundred dollars," Derry reconveyed "the land in the centre of said Billerica with the buildings thereon, situated on the northerly side of the road to Andover, (formerly called Sheldon's Lane)," with the 1938 bounds (215 feet to the corner "formed by the center lines of the stone walls," 21 feet by the Parsonage, 202 feet by land of Jennie F. Blodgett, 67 feet 6 inches on the road). "Being the same premises conveyed to me by deed of Jennie F. Blodgett dated July 30, 1938." A straw conveyance so that the title could be put in Derry and his wife jointly. Dated and recorded July 10, 1944.

Blodgett, and 67 feet 6 inches on the road. "Being the same premises conveyed to us by deed of Jennie F. Blodgett dated July 10, 1944" (Book 1009 Page 249). Dated, acknowledged and recorded Jan. 31, 1946. Gustave Champagne, a barber, kept his shop in the west apartment; the 1946 plan of the Blodgett land (Plan Book 81 Plan 66) shows the lot as theirs. Owners after the Champagnes have been private individuals.
