Bristol Street
Bristol Street runs east from Boston Road in North Billerica, close to the Chelmsford and Lowell line, toward the Concord River. It is one of the six streets of Berwick, the house-lot development laid out in June 1896 by Walter C. Stevens of Melrose, civil engineer, for Wood, Harmon & Co. of Lowell, the Wood, Harmon Real Estate Association (Plan Book 12, Plan 10, recorded July 2, 1896). On the plan Bristol Street is the second street from the town line, between Amherst Street, which ends at it, and Casco Street, with lots 22 to 41 along it. The plan gives no reason for the name; Bristol, like Berwick, Amherst, Casco, Clifton and Winthrop, is a New England place name (there are Bristols in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut), and no record ties it to a Billerica person.
The street is not in the town's street lists of 1897 and 1899 or in the 1901 directory; the 1912 directory lists "Bristol (N. B.), from Boston rd. n. Chelmsford line to Concord river." The town accepted Amherst Street and Bristol Street at the annual meeting of February 9, 1946, under Article 53, "Moved and so voted." In 1957 the highway department gave it an asphalt surface, and in 1974 it was hot topped with Type I bituminous concrete with Amherst, Casco, Vasa and Clifton Streets. In 1968 a 6-inch water main was laid from "Vassar Street" (evidently Vasa Street) north through an easement, recorded on a plan of August 1967 (Plan Book 106, Plan 130), to Casco Street and on to Bristol Street.
Bristol Street was not on the official map of 1831 and was not among the roads accepted in 2016. Its name has not changed since 1896.
