Charles Shimkus
Charles Shimkus
Charles Shimkus, a private first class in the United States Army, was one of the twenty-nine Billerica men who died in the Second World War. On July 15, 1942, he married Irene Hogan of Tewksbury; the town clerk recorded him as living in Billerica. The War Department's Honor List of Dead and Missing for Massachusetts, published after the war, lists him under Middlesex County, with the Army serial number 31137921, among the men who died in the service of causes other than battle. The date and place of his death have not been found.
His name is on the World War Memorials at the south end of the Town Common, which the town first set up about 1948 as a bronze plaque on a fieldstone boulder and replaced in 2004 with a larger granite memorial listing the five Billerica men who died in the First World War and the twenty-nine who died in the Second.
