Christopher C. Walker House
The Christopher C. Walker House stands on the west side of Billerica Avenue in North Billerica, on a lot 175 feet wide that runs back about 224 feet to the railroad. It was built in 1893 by Christopher C. Walker, son of Benjamin Walker, whose own house stood just to the south at 30 Billerica Avenue.
The land was part of the old Rogers farm, which Isaac Kidder sold to John Rogers in 1789 and which John Rogers passed to his son Hermon in 1827. Hermon Rogers sold the farm to Anthony Jones in 1859, and in 1864 Jones and his partners Lyman Haynes and Dudley Foster sold most of it to Martin Conway, keeping a five-acre strip between Conway's land and the Boston and Lowell Railroad. Judith Jones, Anthony's widow, sold that strip to Conway in 1883, and in 1886 Conway sold three acres of it, 678 feet along the railroad, to Benjamin Walker.
On April 10, 1893 Benjamin Walker sold the northern 175 feet of his land to his son Christopher for $200: "a certain tract of land situate in North Billerica," bounded east on Billerica Street, north by Mrs. Cullinan, west by the railroad and south by "my other land." No buildings were mentioned. By September of the same year Christopher had built a house, for he mortgaged "a certain lot of land with the buildings thereon" to Thomas Kiernan of Chelmsford for $500, a loan he paid off in 1896. No house stood here on the 1853 Walling map.
On October 17, 1903 Christopher C. Walker and his wife Annie M. Walker sold the house to James F. and Martha B. Delmege for $1,455, taking back a $550 mortgage that was discharged in 1908. James F. Delmege was the agent at the North Billerica railroad station and had bought the next lot south from Benjamin Walker in 1897; by 1903 that lot belonged to William Balmforth, who is named as the southern abutter in the deeds from then on.
The Delmeges sold the house in 1916 to Daniel J. and Ellen J. Mahoney as joint tenants. Daniel J. Mahoney was a fireman on the Boston and Maine Railroad, and the 1931 directory lists the family on Billerica Avenue. After Ellen's death he deeded the property in 1954 to himself and another family member as joint tenants; he died in Billerica on May 28, 1965. The house passed within the family and then to private owners in 1976, and was sold again in 2025.
Every deed from 1893 to 2003 repeats the same bounds: 175 feet on the avenue, 224 feet on the north and south lines, and 175 feet on the railroad. The assessor lists the lot at one acre with an old-style house of six rooms.
