Cold Spring Road

Cold Spring Road is a short street running west from Canterbury Street on the north side of Nuttings Lake. It was Baldwin Street until about 1990.

It first appears as Baldwin Street on "Nuttings Lake Park Addition, Plan F," drawn in June 1915 by H. A. Millhouse, civil engineer and surveyor, and recorded October 20, 1915 in Plan Book 32, Plan 91. There it is the northernmost of the side streets off Canterbury Street, next north of Deerfield Street. The plan gives no reason for the name Baldwin. The street guide of 1930 to 1931 lists "Baldwin (north side Nuttings Lake) from Canterbury to B & M R R," next to the much older Baldwin Road in East Billerica.

Articles to accept "Baldwin Street from Canterbury Street to end, approximately 500 feet" were dismissed in 1937 and 1938. On February 9, 1946 the annual meeting voted to accept "Baldwin Street from Canterbury Street 450 feet," and after the selectmen laid it out on August 26, 1946 the special town meeting of October 28, 1946 accepted the laying out for water mains. The town's index of accepted streets lists it as "Baldwin St. (N. L.)," for Nuttings Lake, to keep it apart from Baldwin Road.

That duplication is why the name was changed. In the town's program of 1988 to 1991 to remove duplicate street names, Baldwin Street at Nuttings Lake became Cold Spring Road; the change is not itemized in the annual reports, but Cold Spring Road appears in town lists by 2003. No record explains the new name. The street is not among the roads of the 1831 map accepted in 2016.
