This is the first house on the house lot of Daniel Shed at 38 Concord Road, as it stood before a full-sized front was added facing the street in the middle of the 18th century. Shed came from Braintree and was in Billerica by 1659, when he bought George Willice's original right; his house lot of 23 acres ran to the Concord River. He died in 1700.
When Charles E. Stearns of the Billerica Historical Commission recorded the house in 1973, the "original" house had become the ell. It faced south, and by the time of the enlargement it had been given a gambrel roof, a form not common in Billerica and possibly still within the 17th century. Stearns thought portions of Shed's own house might survive, unidentified, inside it. The lot passed from Daniel Shed to his son Nathan and then to Nathan's youngest son, William Shed, who sold it in 1745 to Josiah Brown. The later history of the house is told under Shedd Family Homestead.
