Born 1930-10-14
Died 1950-09-02 Korea

Donald Carmichael (1930-1950) was a Billerica soldier who died in the Korean War, and the first of the six names on the town's Korean Veterans Memorial in Pollard Park on Andover Road.

His birth was recorded in Billerica on October 14, 1930, the son of Robert and Frances Carmichael. His mother died in April 1934, aged 25, and his father, who later married again, raised a large family in the town. Robert E. Carmichael kept house on Washington Avenue in West Billerica in the 1940s, served the town for several years as a deputy clerk and deputy warden at the polls, and by 1951 was a herdsman at the Kitchener Farms in Pinehurst.

Donald Carmichael served in the United States Army (service number 11177159). The National Archives' record of Korean War casualties lists his death on September 2, 1950, in the first months of the war, when the American and South Korean armies were holding the Pusan Perimeter. The records found do not give his unit or the place where he fell.

The town honors him on the Korean Veterans Memorial, dedicated in 2001, with Wallace Ritter, Albert Vaillancourt, Robert Farthing, Richard Brouillette and Fredrick Selfridge.
