The Elmore A. Grimes House was likely built for Elmore A. Grimes (1846–1894), who worked briefly as a fireman for the Boston and Lowell Railroad, and his wife, Ella Barnes Grimes (1853–1923), presumably a homemaker, on a parcel of land on Main Street (present-day Boston Road) they purchased from Albert Stearns in 1886. The couple married in 1878 and had at least four children: Arthur H. (b. 1881), Annie M., Ida B., and George A. (b. 1883). Elmore and Ella remained at the address until Elmore’s death in 1894. Ella and her children left the property after Elmore’s death and moved to Hyde Park, VT. Ella retained ownership of the Elmore A. Grimes House until 1899, when she sold it to Mary A. Miller.
