George J. Dutile House
The George J. Dutile House at 9 Lawrence Street in North Billerica stands on lot 18 of a 1915 house-lot plan between Pollard Street and High Street. It was built in the early 1920s by George J. Dutile, a North Billerica carpenter and builder who later ran the Dutile Coal Company on High Street. The assessors date it to about 1830, but the deeds show that the lot was vacant until after 1919.
The land was once part of a nineteen-acre tract called the "Patten Lot," bounded by "the road leading from the 'Corner' so called in said Billerica to Tewksbury," by land formerly of Jonas W. Russell and by land of one Stewart. Alden Orrin Dane, the former selectman who laid out the house lots on Dane Avenue, sold it in September 1907 to H. Frances Clark of Lowell, who sold it in April 1908 to the North Billerica carpenters Michael H. McElligott and Thomas F. McElligott. In May 1910 the McElligotts sold about four acres of it, running back from a 51-foot frontage on Pollard Street, to Lawrence A. Adlington of Lowell, and in 1913 they laid out the rest of their land as house lots on Fairview Street (now Fayerweather Street) and Prospect Street.
Adlington, a foreman who lived on Pollard Street near High Street, had Smith and Brooks of Lowell survey his land on April 12, 1915. Their "Plan of Land in Billerica, Mass., belonging to Lawrence A. Adlington," recorded in November 1915, carried Fairview and Prospect Streets on to a new forty-foot cross street, the present Lawrence Street, with eleven lots of 5,000 square feet in a row along its far side. The only building on the plan is a house on lot 1 at Pollard Street. Lot 18, fifty feet wide and a hundred deep, backed on land of Mary J. Perrigo.
George J. Dutile bought lot 18 from Adlington, by then living in Canton, on Dec. 5, 1919; the deed names no buildings. He had already bought lots 5 and 7 of the same plan in 1915 and 1917. On Nov. 4, 1924, Dutile, who had married Cecile Tremblay in 1919, conveyed lots 5, 7 and 18 to Ethel A. Morse of Lowell, who deeded them back the same morning to George and Cecile B. Dutile together, "Together with the buildings on all said premises." The Dutiles themselves lived on Pollard Street.
On Nov. 18, 1944 the Dutiles sold lot 18, "with the buildings located thereon," to Lloyd G. Stuart and his wife, G. Everlena Stuart, who financed the purchase with a $900 mortgage from the Billerica Trust Company. Lloyd Stuart, a stationary engineer, also served the town as a special police officer. The Stuarts lived in the house for more than forty years. After his death his widow sold it in October 1986 to private owners, who sold it in 2014 to the present owner. Lawrence Street, a private way when the house was built, was accepted by the town as a public way in 1980.
