Gideon Gilman House
The Gideon Gilman House stands on the west side of Allen Road, across from the site of the District No. 10 schoolhouse. Its land was once part of the French homestead, which lay on both sides of the road; by 1823 it belonged to Daniel Shed, and through the 1840s and 1850s the Shed farm, with its pasture and woodland on the west side of the road, passed through several owners until George C. Gilman of Malden bought it in 1856.
In September 1857 George C. Gilman sold Gideon Gilman of Billerica the "South field" of the farm on the east side of the road and "another parcel of land on the Westerly side of said County road containing about five acres", running 26 rods 7 feet along the road from the southwest corner of the Marshall Farm. Neither deed names any buildings, and the Walling map of 1853 shows nothing on this side of the road opposite the school. When Gideon Gilman mortgaged the five acres to George E. Martin of Boston in 1864 they were still bare land. By April 25, 1868, when he sold them to Elizabeth C. Carter for $1,100, the lot came "with the buildings thereon": the house was built in those four years.
Elizabeth C. Carter, a widow, sold the place in 1871 for $1,400 to Josiah Richardson of Arlington, who the same month bought 3 acres 72 rods adjoining it on the north from Hugh M. Sanborn. The Beers atlas of 1875 marks the house on the west side of Allen Street, opposite M. Averill's. Richardson's land passed to Mary Cutter of Arlington, a widow, who in June 1883 sold it for $2,000 to George C. Crosby. In 1897 Crosby sold Jennie V. Kimball of Lowell "About 14 acres of land with the buildings thereon" on the westerly side of "the County Road leading from East Billerica to Woburn", meaning to convey "all the land which I own situated on said westerly side of said road". The bounds written then, by Holden, Hugh Sanborn, the heirs of Tufts, Marshall and Sweatt, were copied into every deed of the property for the next fifty-five years.
The next owners kept the place only a few years at a time. The Kimballs' mortgage to Matthew H. Kohlrausch was foreclosed at an auction on the premises in September 1901, and the buyer, Ethel A. Morse of Lowell, deeded the place to Kohlrausch the same day. He sold it in 1906 to Katie E. Taylor, foreclosed her mortgage at another auction in September 1908 and took it back through the buyer, Frederic A. Fisher, then sold it in 1909 to Charles W. Williamson. Williamson deeded it to his wife Alice J. Williamson in 1913, and she sold it in September 1914 to Joseph B. Nicholson of Franklin.
Nicholson owned the place until his death. His will left it to Florence Ellerton Nicholson and Amelia Frances Ellerton, who sold it in June 1940 to Thomas H. M. and Johnenia Joyce, "with the buildings thereon situated on the westerly side of Allen Road". The Joyces granted a gas pipeline right of way across the land in 1951 and sold the property to private owners in 1952. In 1992 the land was divided into a small roadside lot and the 14.77-acre house lot, which the assessor lists today with a Colonial-style house, and it has since passed by private and family-trust transfers.
