Hannaford House

The Hannaford House stood on the east side of Concord Road, just south of the corner of Cummings Street in Billerica Centre, on a narrow lot about 44 feet wide on the road and 170 feet deep. The 1973 inventory form called it the northerly of two houses at 30 and 32 Concord Road and dated it about 1845. The house was taken down in 1997 or 1998, and a new Colonial was built on the lot in 1998.

The lot was the road end of an old tanyard. In April 1748 Nathaniel Davidson, a trader, sold John Parker, tanner, about half an acre at the back of his house lot near the Centre, bounded south by William Bowers and north by the Rev. John Chandler, "with all the Buildings and Tan fatts thereon", and with "a road twelve feet wide" from Davidson's barn down to the vats. Davidson had bought the two-acre messuage in 1740 from Edward Jewett, also a tanner. John Parker's will of 1801 left "the tan-house and tan-yard" to his son, Col. John Parker. The colonel's will of 1831 divided the tanyard between his son David Parker and his grandson Charles Henry Parker, and in May 1834 the grandson's guardian sold his half at auction to David Parker for $350: half of "the land & buildings" of about half an acre "including the lane leading to the same from the road leading from Billerica to Concord", bounded west by the Cumings Place. David Parker now held the whole tanyard. No deed links the 1852 house lot to the tanyard directly, but its position at the end of the lane, north of the Cumings Place, makes the identification probable.

On December 16, 1852 David Parker, yeoman, sold Charles M. Hannaford, mason, "a certain lot of land situate in said Billerica Centre with the buildings thereon" for $600. It was bounded south by John R. Mills, east by Parker's own land and north by land formerly of the Rev. Benjamin Putnam. A house therefore already stood on the lot when Hannaford bought it, and the 1853 map shows "C. Hannaford" there. In 1859 he declared it his homestead. He and his wife Jane A. Hannaford mortgaged it to John O. Richardson for $150 in 1863, and Hannaford borrowed again on it from Anthony Jones in 1880 (together with the nine-acre "Hannaford Place" in the south part of town) and from Wilder Bennett of Lowell in 1882. In November 1883 Anthony C. Rivers bought up both outstanding mortgages and paid off the Jones loan, the executrix of Anthony Jones made an entry to foreclose, and on November 17, 1883 Hannaford deeded the house to Rivers for $700, "subject to two mortgages". The 1875 owner "A. Lovejoy" given on the inventory form is not borne out by the deeds, which show Hannaford holding title from 1852 to 1883.

Rivers, whose wife was Callie R. Rivers, sold the place in 1891 to John A. Porter of Westford for $1,000, and Porter sold it in 1892 to Henry M. Hutchins of Billerica. Hutchins left the house in trust by his will, and in June 1921 his daughter Mary S. Stowers, formerly Hutchins, as trustee and in her own right, sold it in two halves to Carl M. and Edna V. Thoresen, taking back two mortgages of $600 each. The lot was then measured as 7,800 square feet. The Thoresens, by then of Concord, sold it in 1923 to Josiah B. Robinson and Minnie E. Robinson; "Bart" Robinson is the owner the inventory form remembers from after the First World War. After Minnie Robinson's estate was administered, the house was sold in June 1948 to a couple who kept it nearly fifty years and added a 5,310-square-foot strip at the Cummings Street corner in 1957.

After a private sale in 1996, the two parcels were sold in April 1998 to George Allen & Son Construction Inc., which sold them in June 1998, both times for $55,000. The old house was replaced by the present Colonial, built in 1998, and the property has changed hands privately since.
