Harvey Snow House
The Harvey Snow House is a small Greek Revival cottage on the east side of Concord Road in South Billerica, a short walk south of Hill's Mills. Its lot has hardly changed in 185 years: about 65 feet on the road and 70 feet deep, between the Joseph Dane House on the north and what was once the Josiah Hill House farm.
The land was part of the farm of Jonathan Hill (died 1796), whose will gave his sons Job and Josiah Hill "the southern part of my farm in Billerica on the east side of Bedford-road." In 1831 Josiah, then living in Bedford, sold his son Artemas Hill the farm across the road together with a lot of about five and a half acres on this side. On July 29, 1841 Artemas sold "a certain parcel of land ... containing sixteen square rods", a four-rod square on "the Road leading from Billerica to Bedford", to Harvey Snow of Lowell, machinist, for ten dollars. No building is mentioned. Harvey was Artemas's first cousin: Hazen's register shows that Josiah Snow married Azubah Hill, a daughter of Jonathan Hill, in 1797, and that their children Lucy Hill, Harvey and Alexander Hill Snow were baptized in Billerica in 1811. Josiah later died in Grafton, Vermont.
The cottage went up soon after the purchase. When Jonathan Hill of the mills sold the next lot north to Joseph Dane, a machinist in his shop, in July 1844, the bounds began "at said road and land of Lucy or Henry Snow". The 1853 Walling map labels the house "H. Snow". Harvey Snow was living in Buchanan County, Iowa by 1858, and in December 1868 Clara M. B. Snow of Independence, Iowa released to Jonathan Hill, for $125, "a certain tract of land with a small house thereon", bounded by the heirs of Joseph Dane on the north and by Francis Wheeler on the east and south.
Jonathan Hill died in 1870 and left his estate to his widow, Laura W. Hill. In December 1870 she sold the cottage to James Leslie for $150, so Leslie, shown at the house on the 1875 map, owned it rather than rented it. After his death his young son Robert S. Leslie's guardian, Richard Hanna, sold it at auction in August 1881 to Susan J. Cowdrey, wife of Marcus M. Cowdrey, for $550, "she being the highest bidder". The Cowdreys mortgaged it to the guardian, to John B. Stearns in 1888 and to Albert S. Taylor in 1894, and in November 1896 sold "the buildings thereon" to Henry Desmazes, who had land on the Bedford road.
Desmazes soon moved to California. From Santa Barbara in 1903 he deeded the house to his son Charles S. and daughter Edith M. Desmazes; Charles passed his half to his sister Laura L. Dorand in 1905, and after Laura died childless in Los Angeles in 1907 her widower released it to her father. In December 1909 Henry and Edith Desmazes, then of Los Angeles, sold it to Mary A. Dolan of Boston, who paid off the purchase mortgage in 1912. In 1930 she deeded it to Josephine M. Dolan, who deeded it straight back to her for life. Mary A. Dolan died in Boston on December 23, 1939; after Josephine's death her estate sold the house in 1960 to a private owner. It has changed hands among private owners several times since, most recently by a family transfer in 2024.
The deeds correct two points in the 1974 MACRIS form. The Snow children did not hold the land as heirs of their grandfather: Harvey Snow bought the empty lot in 1841, which dates the cottage to 1841-1844. And the house was not rented to James Leslie in 1875; he had bought it in 1870.

"My Kinny-farm, so called, containing by estimation about eight acres, with the buildings thereto belonging" goes to son Job. Job and Josiah share the land in Bedford (except Crooked Meadow) and "the southern part of my farm in Billerica on the east side of Bedford-road," divided from the rest by a line from the drawbars a little south of the grist mill along the wall of the ox-pasture, with the Peter lot of river meadow to Job, the Parker lot of meadow to Josiah, and the right to grind their own grain at the corn mill. To son Jonathan, the executor, all the rest of the lands and real estate in Billerica and Carlisle, Crooked Meadow, the stock, tools, clock and great brass kettle. Money to daughters Mary and Isabella; to the five unmarried daughters Susanna, Lucy, Elizabeth, Zuba and Anna, 20 pounds each, the household furniture, and while single the east chamber, the bedroom below at the northwest corner, the kitchen, well and wash yard, half an acre for a garden and a cow kept for them. For one dollar and other consideration, the same 65-foot parcel on the Concord Road "with the buildings thereon", between C. H. Hill and Joseph Alexander, granted back to Mary A. Dolan "to their own use for and during the term of her natural life", "Being the same premises conveyed to me by said Mary A. Dolan by deed of even date to be recorded herewith". Dated July 17, 1930 (instrument 353, pages 415-416; the 1960 deed gives it as Book 792, Page 414). Mary A. Dolan died at 30 King Street, Boston, on December 23, 1939 (Boston death certificate recorded at Book 1701, Page 477).

Quitclaim of "a certain parcel of land with the buildings thereon situated in that part of the Town of Billerica ... called South Billerica", from a point on "the Concord Road (formerly called the Bedford Road)" by land of Charles H. Hill, about 65 feet on the road, 70 feet by Joseph Alexander, 65 feet by Alexander and 75 feet by C. H. Hill. "For my title see Estate of Josephine M. Dolan, Suffolk Probate 403658. See also deed to Josephine M. Dolan dated July 17, 1930" (given there as Book 792, Page 413; indexed at 792/414), and "The life tenant Mary A. Dolan named in the deed recorded in Book 792 Page 414 died on December 23, 1939" (her Boston death certificate was recorded in 1965 at Book 1701, Page 477). Later private sales of the house, now 356 Concord Road (the same 4,550-square-foot lot): 1965 (Book 1701, Page 477), 1968 (Book 1853, Page 165), 1971 (Book 1977, Page 221), 1972 for $20,990 (Book 2022, Page 594), 1975 (Book 2179, Page 434), 1979 for $36,000 (Book 2350, Page 724), 2000 for $176,000 (Book 10889, Page 105) and a 2024 transfer to a family trust (Book 38950, Page 143).
