Hayes' Restaurant was a roadhouse and restaurant on the Boston Road (Route 3) in North Billerica, at the corner of Pershing Street, on the lot that is now Garrison's at 303 Boston Road. It burned down on April 10, 1968.
Thomas J. and Helen T. Hayes of Billerica bought the Boston Road lots of the Suburban Land Company's 1917 subdivision in May 1933, after the company foreclosed on Pasquale and James Abruzzese, and opened Hayes' Restaurant, "Where You Find the Best Foods," with "Tasty Chicken, Steak, Lobster Dinners." Thomas died by 1940, and in 1945 Joseph W. and Rose R. Gainor of Lynn bought the property and kept the name. "J. Gainor, Prop." advertised "Hayes' Dine and Dance" in 1948, "Specializing in Lobsters, Southern Fried Chicken, Steaks, and Spaghetti," with parties accommodated.
John J. Ahern and Donald H. Quinn of Woburn bought the restaurant lots in 1950, and Ahern became sole owner in 1958. Under them it was the Hayes Restaurant, offering "Wedding Receptions, Anniversaries, Bachelor Parties, Showers" with "Orchestra & Entertainment nightly," and from 1953 the Hayes Steak House, with "Dancing Entertainment Nightly." At 3:20 a.m. on April 10, 1968 a general alarm fire destroyed the restaurant. The "rambling, wooden structure was fully engaged when the firemen arrived," and Fire Chief Paul Roper called for aid from Chelmsford and Tewksbury; nobody was injured. Ahern rebuilt on the lot, and the new building opened as the Post and Rail.
