The Mill Brook was likely dammed in the early 1700s and the Hill family built a mill to harness its energy. By the 1794 map, it's an important landmark for travelers on the Concord Road.

In 1808, Samuel Parker patented a leather-splitting machine. Jonathan Hill purchased the rights to make these machines around 1830, and converted the mill to a machine shop. The business was sold to a distant relative, Charles H. Hill in 1853, who developed the area even further.

The foundations of these mills can still be seen along the eastern side of Concord Road.
