Hiram E. Davis was a Billerica soldier of the Civil War who died at Point of Rocks, Virginia, in January 1865. He was mustered on August 8, 1864 into Company M of the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry and died there on January 18, 1865, after five months' service.
His name was left off the Soldiers' Monument on the Common when it was dedicated in 1873. Henry A. Hazen wrote in 1883 that his name, with those of Henry Newbury, Edward H. Persons and Calvin G. Tuttle, "would properly have been inscribed with their comrades' upon the monument." The annual town meeting of 1921 voted under Article 10 that the four names "be placed on the Soldiers Monument" and raised twenty dollars for the work, and his name is on the monument today.
