John Allen House
The John Allen House was the farmhouse of the Allen family on the East Road, the road now called Allen Road after them. The 1853 Walling map labels it "J. Allen", on the west side of the road just south of Marshall's Lane (now Baldwin Road), and a house is already drawn on the spot on the 1831 map. The 1875 Beers map gives the name as "Mrs S. Allen".
The land was part of the old Thomas Ross homestead. Hezekiah Dunckle sold 100 acres of it to Samuel Lamson in 1761, and in 1777 Lamson sold "the Lamson farm (so called)" to the miller John Patten. Patten died without a will in 1815. His heirs were his widow Sarah, his son Hosley, his daughters Sarah Allen (wife of Zadock Allen), Hannah Patten and Jane Allen (wife of Joseph Allen), and the children of his late son John. The Allens were already living on the farm in 1817, when Zadock and Sarah mortgaged a half of it to her sister Hannah. In 1827 Hannah and her husband Oliver Baldwin of Lancaster sold Sarah Allen for $850 "a certain farm situate in the southeasterly part of said Billerica formerly owned by John Patten late of Billerica deceased containing about ninety eight acres". The same year John Allen, Sarah's son, released to her for $500 his half of the lot "with a dwelling house and Barn thereon", which ran "by the road and crossing the same to the Cow yard" and back across the road to "the old orchard so called".
The "J. Allen" of 1853 was this John Allen, son of Zadock and Sarah. In December 1840 his sister Hannah P. Wright and her husband Jonathan Wright sold him for $176 her right in "all the lands ... of which the late Zadock Allen, father of the said Hannah, died seized". Sarah Allen died in 1846. No later deed or probate shows how the farm passed within the family. By 1875 it was Mrs. or Miss Sophia Allen's, and Hazen's 1883 history places "Miss Sophia Allen, East Road" on this road. Sophia Allen left the farm by a will approved at Lowell on March 18, 1884, to four heirs: Jackson Wright and Josiah Wright (Hannah's sons), Annie E. Tutein and Rebecca A. Campbell. That June the other three sold Campbell their three quarters of "a certain farm with all the buildings thereon ... containing ninety-seven acres and a half".
Rebecca Campbell sold the farm in 1900 to the trustees of the Boston merchant Eben D. Jordan. In 1906 they sold it to the Tutein sisters-in-law of Revere, A. Gertrude and Mary E. Tutein, and A. Gertrude bought out Mary's share in 1907. In 1914 she sold the farm (87 acres after a ten-acre exception) to Harry I. Walton of Nashua, who sold it the same day to Mahlon E. Brande of Reading. In 1915 Brande sold "eighty seven (87) acres, more or less, situated on both sides of Allen road", with the farm tools and wagons, to Marshall B. Smith, who kept it until 1941. It then passed through the Tousignants, a mortgagee's sale in 1943, Roger H. Hildreth, and Lester Forrest and Lera L. Smith. In 1955 the Smiths sold the farm "with the buildings thereon, situated on both sides of Allen Road" to John D. Cooke and Ida B. Elfman.
Cooke and Elfman broke the farm up. Late in 1955 they sold a 23,650-square-foot lot "with the buildings thereon" on the west side of Allen Road (Plan Book 86, Plan 131B), and private owners have held that lot since: it is 105 Allen Road. In 1966 the town took 49.54 acres on the east side of the road for the Locke School. Since the 1955 house lot is the only part of the farm's west side sold with buildings, its old wood-shingled house is very likely the Allen farmhouse. The assessor's date of about 1927 for it is an estimate.
The spot where the 1853 map's house symbol falls, 46 Porter Street, is on the next lot to the north. That land was a 30-acre woodlot "on Boston road or Allen street" that Mary S. Blaikie sold to Nathaniel R. Jones in 1912. Jones sold it to Musgrave's Tower Farm, Inc. in 1953, and none of these deeds mentions buildings. In 1970 the Musgraves sold their dairy farm on Boston Road and this woodlot to J. Everett Farmer for $569,000. He laid both out as Tower Farm Estates (Plan Book 110, Plan 42), and Porter Street now runs from the subdivision to Allen Road. Lot 71, at the Allen Road end of Porter Street, was sold as a bare lot in 1972, and the present split-entry house was built on it in 1972 and 1973.

On March 30, 1815 the widow Sarah Patten (by her mark) asked that "my Son Hosley Patten" administer "the Estate of my late Husband John Patten"; Hosley's memorial says John Patten, yeoman, died intestate within forty days, leaving the widow and four children, "Hosley Patten, Sarah Allen, wife of Zadock Allen, Hannah Patten, Jane Allen, wife of Joseph Allen," and six minor grandchildren, Sally, Jane, Aaron H., Asa, Abel and Lucy Patten, children of the late John Patten Jr. Administration was granted at Concord April 5, 1815 on a $20,000 bond. The inventory lists "The Lamson farm (so called)" at $1,750, eight acres in Mill Meadow, a horse stable near the meeting house, a pew, "The Mill farm lying partly in Billerica & partly in Tewksbury including the buildings thereon" at $3,100, woodland in Wilmington and "the Frost land" in Tewksbury, $6,015 of real estate in all. The 98-acre farm "formerly owned by John Patten" that his daughters held in 1827 appears to be the Lamson farm.
