John Lane, son of Job Lane, inherited half of the 1,500-acre Winthrop farm his father had purchased. He held the rank of Colonel in the militia and was, in the words of town historian Henry Hazen, "very active during the Indian alarms" around the turn of the eighteenth century, a leading citizen of his generation. He married Susanna Whipple of Ipswich in 1681-2, and died January 17, 1714-15.
