Address 400 Boston Rd
MACRIS ID BIL.42
Built 1885

Around 1885, John Oliver Richardson, scion of the family made prosperous by Richardson's Mills, moved to the Center. He occupied this house until his death in 1897, and his widow until 1917.

In the early 1920s, Dr. Orland S. Marshall was lured from a residency at the Lowell General Hospital to general practice in Billerica - a move he always claimed to be temporary - and rented this house from the heirs of John O. Richardson. Although he was retired, it was only after the death of his wife in 1968 that the doctor moved into smaller quarters. The Marshall Middle School is named for him, in testimony to the affection and respect with which he is remembered.
