Joseph Dane House
About 1840, Jonathan Hill purchased Samuel Parker's patent to create leather-splitting machines. A shop was built at the existing Hill's Mills to build the machines and their replacement parts, which were shipped "round the world" for 75 years. Joseph Dane was a machinist who came to work at these shops, as one of the first outsiders in this small community growing up around the shops. In 1844, Jonathan Hill sold the house to Dane, which he was already living in.
By 1875, the property had reverted back to Hill hands with Charles Henry Hill's ascension to the Hill fortune.
