The Joseph Dows House stood on the Rangeway road in the northwest part of Billerica, on land now covered by the Forest Ridge office park at 85 Rangeway Road. The 1853 Walling map labels it "J. Douge," a mishearing of Dows (also written Dowse): the house was the center of the Dows family farm, which ran from the road to Chelmsford south along the Rangeway road to the town way leading over to the Boston and Lowell road.
The elder Joseph Dows, who married Sarah Sprake in 1784, put the farm together from family and neighbors' lots between 1784 and 1809. On April 3, 1835 he deeded it to his son Joseph Dows Jr. for $800, taking back a $1,600 bond and mortgage: the first tract, about eighty acres "on the Rangeway road so called" by the Chelmsford line, came "with the buildings thereon standing," and four more tracts made up the rest. His will of 1836, probated in 1847, refers to "the homestead farm" deeded to the son. Joseph Dows Jr. lived there until his death in 1863. His will left his widow Maria A. Dows money and furniture and gave a fund to the First Baptist Society in Billerica, and the rest went to his brothers and sisters.
On June 4, 1864 the heirs sold the 130-acre farm, "being the homestead of the late Joseph Dows," to John Pasho of Billerica for $2,800, and he mortgaged it back to Amos W. Dows for $2,000 the same day. Pasho borrowed another $800 from Henry Rice in 1869, and Rice bought up the Dows mortgage in 1870. Pasho died about 1870. In 1874 his administrator, Dudley Foster, sold Pasho's remaining right in "his Home farm, containing about one hundred thirty and a half acres" at auction to Rice for ten dollars, and the widow, Mary J. Pasho, released her dower. In 1876 Henry Rice deeded the farm to James E. Rice and had him hold two thirds of it in trust for "Hubert, Prescott, and Cora, the three children of the late John Pasho." The trust was carried out in December 1884. The children's shares were then sold to Sarah E. Litchfield of Lowell: Hubert A. Pasho sold his own, and a guardian sold the two minors' shares.
Mrs. Litchfield sold the farm to George R. Gay in March 1885 for $5,500, and it was put in his wife Nellie's name that August. In 1888 the Gays sold "a parcel of land with the buildings thereon ... Being the homestead of the late Joseph Dows" to May E. Downing for $6,000, but the Downings deeded it back to Mrs. Gay in 1890. By 1892, when she sold it to May W. Messiah, it was known as "the Pasho farm." The Lowell Co-operative Bank foreclosed on Mrs. Messiah in 1897. The farm then passed among several Armenian immigrant families: the Mantarians and Magarians (1897), the Dadeans (1903), and Arakel Arakelian (1910), whose family kept it for seventy years.
In 1981 the Arakelian heirs sold the house lot and the land around it, about nineteen acres between Rangeway Road and Old Rangeway Road, to the Accutest Corporation. The parcel passed to Fairchild Camera and Instrument in 1983 and to the Forest Ridge Nominee Trust in 1986. The old house was taken down about 1987, and the three buildings of the Forest Ridge office park went up on the site in 1988.

Bowers, Amos Spalding), recorded June 4, 1845, for $800, five tracts: the first beginning at a maple tree "on the Rangeway road so called" by William Pollard, to the wall "on Chelmsford line," by the widow Foster, John Baldwin and William Manning back to the Rangeway road, "containing by estimation eighty acres ... with the buildings thereon standing"; the second, about one hundred acres from the Rangeway road along "the road leading to Benjamin Frosts" by Joshua Bennett, Charles Cutler, Manning, Nathaniel Stearns and "the great road," to "the corner of the farm by Dix's house"; and the Adams lot (6 acres, on the turnpike), the Sprake lot (5 acres) and the Mock meadow (3 1/2 acres). A mortgage back to the father (Book 461, Page 425) secured the $1,600 bond named in his will.

Will signed Feb. 29, 1836 (witnesses Amos Spalding, Jedediah W. Sargent, Edward Spaulding), probated 1847. To his wife Mary the household furniture, in lieu of dower in "The Chelmsford Lot" of about 40 acres, which went to his daughters Sally Stearns, Judith Newman, Orpha Blodget, Olive, Melinda Bolton and Mary Brown. To his son Joseph the stock and farming utensils, without affecting "a certain bond in the penal sum of Sixteen hundred dollars given to me by said Joseph, my son, or the mortgage deed of even date therewith": the father had already deeded the farm to Joseph, who was to pay his brothers and sisters Amos, Eliza Ann, Elbridge, Emeline P., Calvin, Harriet and Gustavus. If Joseph died without issue "so that the homestead farm shall revert to me," it was to go to son Elbridge.
