Joseph M. Walsh

Joseph M. Walsh

Joseph Marvin Walsh, a private in the United States Army, was one of the twenty-nine Billerica men who died in the Second World War. He died in the service in 1944, and the War Department's Honor List of Dead and Missing for Massachusetts, published after the war, lists him, with the Army serial number 31354398, among the men who died in the service of causes other than battle.

Town Meeting took up in 1950 an article to name the corner of River Street and Bridle Road Joseph M. Walsh Square, "in honor of Joseph Marvin Walsh who gave his life in the service of his country in 1944", and the corner has carried his name since.

His name is on the World War Memorials at the south end of the Town Common, which the town first set up about 1948 as a bronze plaque on a fieldstone boulder and replaced in 2004 with a larger granite memorial listing the five Billerica men who died in the First World War and the twenty-nine who died in the Second.
