Joseph R. Fall
Joseph R. Fall
Joseph Raymond Fall, a second lieutenant in the United States Army, was one of the twenty-nine Billerica men who died in the Second World War. In 1942 he was living in North Billerica at 9 Holt Street on Holt Street, the home of Earl F. Fall, a printer, and his wife Ruth. The War Department's Honor List of Dead and Missing for Massachusetts, published after the war, lists him as a second lieutenant killed in action. The memorial gives his name as "Fall, Joseph E.", and the library's list of the names as James R. Fall.
In 1950 a Town Meeting article asked for a square in front of the Baptist church in North Billerica, dedicated to the memory of "Thomas Fall who died in the service of his country". The town voted in 1951 to name the plot of land at the junction of Colson Street and Elm Street, by the North Billerica Baptist Church, Lieutenant Joseph Raymond Fall Memorial Square, and told the Park Commissioner to put up a post and name plate there, if possible by Memorial Day, 1951.
His name is on the World War Memorials at the south end of the Town Common, which the town first set up in 1948 as a plaque on a large boulder and replaced in 2004 with a larger granite memorial listing the five Billerica men who died in the First World War and the twenty-nine who died in the Second.
