Joseph Salter Sr. is described as a "carpenter" in the deed to the lot on which he built his house. Four years later, he sold the house and lot to the C.P. Talbot Co. and moved over to the east bank, across the street from the new Chemical Works.
His wife, Hannah, was one of the "active" ladies in the growing community, and she organized the Sunday School out of which the Baptist Church later grew.
This house became the first unit in the "mill housing" along Wilson Street. In 1853, it stood alone.
