Le Lacheur's Market
Le Lacheur's Market was a neighborhood grocery and provision store at the southwest corner of High Street and Mellen Road, now Mellon Road, in North Billerica, kept by Jean B. LeLacheur and his family in the building now known as the Jean B. LeLacheur House. LeLacheur bought the corner lot of the Hillcrest development from George H. Hill in November 1913, when it was vacant, and the store was open by 1916, when the town paid "J. B. Le Lacheur, groceries" $37.44.
The directory of 1917 lists him on High Street, and McSweeney's Billerica and Lowell Express named "Le Lacheur's Groc. Store High St." as one of its call offices. In 1919 the store was "Le Lacheur's Market and Grocery High c Mellen rd," with LeLacheur listed as "grocer also tailor (L)" and his son Edward G. and a Willis Le Lacheur as clerks. It is "Le Lacheur's Market" in the directory of 1921 and "Le Lacheur's Market & Grocery" in that of 1925, and is not listed afterward; by 1931 LeLacheur was listed only as a tailor in Lowell. A postcard of about 1915 shows the proprietors with their delivery vehicle, a Ford Model T depot hack, and names the business LeLacheur's Provisions. LeLacheur sold the building in 1933.
