Levi Sprake House
The Levi Sprake House was the farmhouse at the fork of Boston Road and Treble Cove Road in North Billerica, the junction long called Smith's Corner. The old deeds describe its lot as the "house lot" of about four acres "beginning at the fork of the roads leading to Lowell and the Canal Mills", running northeast along the Canal Mills road (now Treble Cove Road toward North Billerica) and back along the Lowell road (now Boston Road). The house is drawn there on the 1831 town map and on the 1853 Walling map, which labels it "E. Corliss".
The house was standing by 1806. That year Levi Sprake sold the lot, three acres "with the buildings thereon", to Joseph Wilson, a miller. Wilson died within months and left everything to his widow Rebekah. As Rebecca Batcheller of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, she sold the house lot and its outlying fields in 1814 to Susanna Sprake. In 1824 Susanna Sprake sold them for $895 to Nathaniel Stearns, a stone cutter, who lived here until his death in 1845.
Stearns's will ordered his executor, Marshall Preston, to sell his real estate at auction. In March 1846 the widow Sarah Stearns bought the farm for $2,300 and the same day passed it to her son-in-law Anthony Jones. On February 26, 1849 Jones sold "the homestead lot" with three outlying tracts to Elijah Corliss of Billerica, yeoman, for $3,800. Corliss added two more lots on the old road to Chelmsford in 1853. The 1870 agricultural census lists the farm as "Corliss & Smith". The road running from the corner to the Fordway bridge was known as Corliss Street until the town renamed it Treble Cove Road in 1899.
In 1874 Elijah and Melinda Corliss sold the home lot, "with the buildings thereon", to Littleton T. Falcon of Lowell. The 1875 county map shows "L. Faulcon" at the corner. Falcon mortgaged the farm to the Merrimack River Savings Bank, and in 1882 it was sold under that mortgage to Coburn S. Smith. Smith made the house his home for more than forty years. In 1897 he sold the half acre across Boston Road, "opposite my homestead", to Mary Carley, and Melinda Corliss signed that deed as a witness. In 1901 Smith was listed at "Boston rd. c. Treble Cove rd." and Melinda Corliss, "widow of Elijah", boarded with him. She died in 1906 at the age of 78.
In 1926 Coburn S. Smith deeded the four-acre lot "with the buildings thereon" to Mabelle M. Smith, Miriam H. Schmelzer and Gwendolyn H. Smith. In 1927 they sold the corner, 64,300 square feet "with the buildings thereon", to Emil W. Michalek. Michalek lived at the corner and was president of Mac's Cafe and Grill, which was listed there in 1941. In 1953 he sold the northern part of the land (Lot A, now 176 Boston Road) and kept the corner, Lot B, 36,300 square feet "with the buildings thereon", which a pair of straw deeds put in his and his wife's names as tenants by the entirety. In 1957 he ran a tourist home at 184 Boston Road. Michalek died at Billerica on March 31, 1958.
In 1960 his widow sold the corner, still "with the buildings thereon", to Town Investments, Inc. of Billerica, which resold it in 1966 to a private couple. In January 1969 they sold it to M and T Construction Corporation, which obtained setback variances from the Board of Appeals in December 1969 for pump islands, a sign and driveway lights, and in January 1970 sold the lot, then 36,028 square feet "with the buildings thereon", to Mobil Oil Corporation for $94,500. The old house came down for the filling station: Mobil's survey of May 1970 shows an empty lot, Lot B-1 of 33,936 square feet, with a small strip at the corner (Lot B-2) to be deeded to the town for Treble Cove Road. The Mobil station was rebuilt in 1992. ExxonMobil sold the lot in 2007, the station was torn down by 2012, and the corner, now 184 Boston Road, was vacant when it was sold again in 2026.
