Marshall Preston was born in Bedford in 1792 and came to Billerica around 1820. He married Maria Parker, daughter of Colonel John Parker Jr. Preston was town clerk and postmaster until 1849, when he moved to Lexington.
During the pastorate of Rev. Christopher Coffin Hussey, the First Parish Church prospered. The Marshall Preston house was purchased for use as a parsonage for the ministers of the Church until 1965. By then, the parish was not as prosperous and could not afford the maintenance, and the house returned to a private residence.
