Marshall Street runs west from the Middlesex Turnpike near Nutting Lake to Eliot Street, through the cottage colony of Nuttings Lake Park.

The street comes from the lot plans of Nuttings Lake Park, drawn by C. A. Thayer, engineer, of Providence, Rhode Island, in April 1910 ("Area of Lake Over 100 Acres"). Plan A (Plan Book 27, Plan 57, recorded May 31, 1910) shows a road along the shore whose name, only partly legible, begins "Marsh," and a "Revised Section of Plan A" dated May 1912 and recorded June 21, 1913 (Plan Book 30, Plan 23) shows "Marshall Road" running from Columbia Road across Washington Road to Thayer Road beside a pump house lot on the lake. No Marshall family is known in this part of town, and the name appears to have been chosen by the developers along with Columbia, Washington, Massachusetts, Tremont and the other names of the plan; no record explains it.

The town accepted "Marshall Street from the Middlesex Turnpike to Elliott Street" at the annual meeting of February 9, 1935. An article of 1936 asked the town "to tar and gravel Marshall Street from Eliot Street to Turnpike Road," and in 1937 the street was "scraped, raked, rolled, oiled, sanded." Water mains came in 1938 to 1941, when W.P.A. crews laid pipe "from the Turnpike and Lake Street to Marshall Street and through Elliot Street to Main Street." Elm Road was accepted "from Marshall St. to Mass. Ave." in 1949, and in the renaming of 1988 the part of Elm Road running "northerly across Marshall St. to Nutting Lake" became Elmtree Road. Marshall Street was not among the roads of the 1831 map accepted by town meeting in 2016.
