Samuel Brown House
The Samuel Brown House stood on the northeast side of Salem Road at the present 286 Salem Road, just above the fork with Baldwin Road, on a narrow four-acre lot between the road and the bank of the Middlesex Canal. The 1853 Walling map shows "J. F. Baldwin" here, but for most of the nineteenth century the deeds called it simply "the Gray Place."
The land was part of the seventy-acre homestead of Samuel Brown, whose 1791 inventory lists a single dwelling house, barn and outhouse. In August 1801 his son Samuel Brown sold four acres "on the highway" running back "to a stake and stones on the bank of the Middlesex Canal," bounded by Asa Patten and Joel Baldwin, "with all the buildings standing thereon," to William Tarbell Jr., a cordwainer, who passed it the same day to William Tarbell. The house was therefore built between 1791 and 1801, as the canal was being cut along the back of the lot. Tarbell, by then of Temple, New Hampshire, sold the place to Daniel Beard in 1803, and Beard sold it in 1805 to John Gray of Tewksbury, "with the dwelling house standing thereon."
John Gray, a blacksmith, deeded the house to Lucy Kendall, wife of Cyrus Kendall, in 1821. In 1826 the selectmen had Gray placed under a guardian for "excessive drinking and idleness"; the house was no longer his. By 1843 the widow Lucy Gray was living there, and that year Cyrus Kendall sold her his half of "the Gray Place with a dwellinghouse & barn thereon." In 1845 Lucy F. Gray and Jerome Kendall sold it to Joel Baldwin, whose farm adjoined it on the south, and in 1847 Joel sold it, "with a house and barn," to John F. Baldwin for $1,000.
John F. Baldwin, a member of the family whose farm gave Baldwin Road its name, added an acre across the line in the 1851 division of the elder Joel Baldwin's estate with his brother Joel and his sister Mary Ann Manning, and in October 1853 bought from Samuel Brown a strip running "to the Shoulder of the bank of the late Middlesex Canal," the canal having closed. A month later, on November 3, 1853, he sold the enlarged six-acre Gray Place to Charles G. Fletcher, a horse trader, and took Fletcher's house lot in Billerica Center in exchange; he later lived in Lowell and married Eveline Rogers in 1861. Fletcher resold within eight days to William Stewart 2d, who sold in 1854 to Orren Hutchinson, a laborer. In 1861 Hutchinson sold the house and an adjoining four and a quarter acres to Mark R. Wilson of Roxbury, who moved to Billerica and kept the place for thirty years.
Later owners came and went quickly: Thomas Crowther of Lowell bought in 1892 and died soon after; his widow Henrietta and heirs sold in 1894 to Charles T. Eaton, who sold in 1898 to Sarah S. Saunders of Lowell, who sold in 1901, "all crops now planted or growing" included, to Ella A. Silloway of Boston. No later deed of the Gray Place was found. The old house was gone by 1930, when the present house at 286 Salem Road was built, and by 1950 the land belonged to Nicholas Pichowicz, who had it surveyed into house lots along the new Pichowicz Road; 286 Salem Road is Lot 51 on that plan and has been privately owned since 1951.
