The Samuel Cole House is a two-story Federal house that a blacksmith built on the road from Billerica to Bedford (now Concord Road) soon after 1835. Route 3 later ran through its first site, and the house was moved across the road to the lot that is now 263 Old Concord Road.
Samuel Cole came from Watertown and married Mary Marshall of Chelmsford in 1833. On Feb. 3, 1835 he bought from Jonathan Hill "a certain tract of land ... containing twenty acres more or less" on the east side of the road, together with the seven acre "Pond Meadow" behind it, for $375. The deed names no buildings. The twenty acres had come down from Capt. Ralph Hill, whose will (proved 1789) left his lands "on the southeast side of the highway" to his son William. William Hill sold the lot to Sears Cook in 1815, Cook's son Francis inherited it, and Francis Cook sold it to Jonathan Hill in 1819. MACRIS says Cole's brother Thaddeus, a carpenter, may have built the house. Cole kept his Samuel Cole Blacksmith Shop at the north end of the lot, where the road bends. The 1853 Walling map shows "B. Shop" and two buildings marked "S. Cole" on that side of the road. The second was a small house, later the Martha A. Dodge House.
Mary Cole was a daughter of James Marshall, whose farm lay across the road. In 1865 the Coles and the other Marshall heirs sold that farm to Charles A. Ranlett and John H. Osgood. Cole sold a back corner of his own lot to Edward J. Hill in 1877, but Hazen's history of 1883 says he still "lives on the homestead." He left the place to his widow by will. In 1886 Mary Cole, then of Waltham, sold the twenty-five acres "with the buildings thereon" to Isaac L. Watts for $1,300.
Watts sold to Herbert F. Colby in 1890 and took the place back in 1897. That year it went to Sarah L. Williams and then to Hannah Morrill, wife of John W. Morrill. In 1899 and 1901 the Morrills sold two lots at the north end, by the old shop site, to the Lexington and Boston Street Railway. In 1913 Hannah Morrill sold the house and farm to Edward M. and Fanny F. Mace of Hollis, N.H. In 1928 Fanny Mace's guardian sold 20.6 acres "with the buildings thereon" to William Mikulsky and his wife for $4,000. The plan made for that sale (Plan Book 52, Plan 86) shows the house on the road between the small Dodge house lot and the old railway lot.
The state took eighteen acres of the Mikulsky land for Route 3 in 1953 (Layout No. 4072). The house was moved across the road onto Lots 321 and 322 of the Ranlett Grove subdivision (Land Court Plan 2792-L, 1929). That lot was part of the old Marshall farm, sold by Mary Cole and her family in 1865. The Ranlett heirs registered the farm in the Land Court in 1910 and sold it to the Ranlett Grove Realty Company in 1923, which divided the road frontage into house lots. The company sold Lots 321 and 322 in September 1951. The certificate issued to the next owners in May 1953 already gives their address as Concord Road, so the house had probably been moved by then. Private owners have held it since (certificates of 1964, 1967 and 1978). The assessor lists the lot at 0.423 acres and dates the house "about 1800."
MACRIS (1974) says the widow sold about 1885 and the Mikulskis bought in 1926. The deeds give Aug. 26, 1886 for the widow's sale and Oct. 20, 1928 for the guardian's sale to the Mikulskys. MACRIS gives 1953 for the move. The Land Court records place it between the September 1951 lot sale and May 1953.

Will dated Oct. 26, 1811 (witnesses Joseph Parker, Francis Kidder and Joseph Locke): to his wife Abigail "the improvement of all my house and one half of all my other real estate" for life; $500 each to his daughters Abigail Crosby, Susannah Walker and Sarah Gleason; the residue to his son Francis Cook, sole executor. Sears Cook died in the summer of 1816; the will was proved at Chelmsford Oct. 1, 1816. The file has no inventory, and neither the will nor the indexes show the house lot he bought in 1815 still in his estate: William Richardson, a witness to the 1815 deed, held it and sold it with full warranty in June 1816, so Cook's title passed to him by a conveyance that was never recorded.

The Marshall heirs sell "a certain farm" in Billerica of about 75 acres with the buildings, beginning at the northeast corner at land of Isaac Roby on the road leading to Concord, southerly by the road to land occupied by Geo. W. Emerson, westerly and southerly by Emerson and Samuel Cole to other Ranlett land, westerly to Concord River, northerly by the river to Roby, and easterly by Roby "as the fence now stands" to the road, with the right of way through Roby's land "being the same liberty that was given William Hill by the last will and testament of his father." Dated Oct. 6, 1865. Ranlett, of Charlestown, and Osgood, of Chelsea, mortgaged it the same day to Mary Cole for $900 (Book 44 Page 526, discharged Feb. 1871).

Transfer Certificate 3753, from Certificate 2090: the Ranlett Grove Realty Company owns the Ranlett land with "five hundred nineteen and 42/100" feet on the westerly line of the Main Road, lots C and H and numbered lots on Plan 2792-G (C. Licensed by the Middlesex Probate Court on Oct. 18, 1928, the guardian of Fannie F. Mace, "an insane person of Wakefield," sells at private sale for $4,000 "a certain piece or parcel of land with the buildings thereon situated in Billerica ... containing 20.6 acres," bounded by stone walls on the south and east and by the road from Bedford to Billerica, excepting the small house lot (160 by 125 feet) and the railway's 100 by 50 foot lot. Department of Public Works Layout No. 4072 and Order of Taking for the limited access relocation of the Middlesex Turnpike "to become Route 3," with a relocation of Concord Road beginning about 1700 feet from "The Maples, Inc." at the junction of Riverhurst and Concord Roads. Parcel 44, a 0.18 acre strip 234.68 ft along the Concord Road frontage of Ozeline Wise's Lot A1 (Certificate 5623), is taken for a $1 award, along with her rights in the private way Riverhurst Road (Land Court Case 2792, Parcel R-5). Plan 2792-Q (H. G. Gray, Sept. 15, 1953) labels the road "Concord Road (formerly Main Road)"; the strip was re-registered to the Commonwealth as Certificate 9222 (May 12, 1954) and the rest of Lot A1 stayed on Certificate 5623.
