Samuel Cole was a blacksmith who came to Billerica and married Mary Marshall of Chelmsford in 1833. He bought the land in 1835, and built the house soon after. His brother James settled across the street, and his other brother Thaddeus was a carpenter who may have been the actual builder of the house.

In 1885, the house was sold by Samuel's widow, and some time later was occupied by Edward and Fanny Mace. The widow Mace sold to the Mikulski family in 1926. When Route 3 was built, the house was moved 500 yards southwest and across the street.
