Samuel Richardson House (Alexander Road)
The Samuel Richardson House was the farmhouse of the Gleason homestead in East Billerica, on the southeast side of the Shawsheen River where the farm ran over the line into Wilmington. The 1853 Walling map labels it "G. Gleason and A. G. Sheldon". The house stood on Alexander Road at about the present 71 Alexander Road, and its site is now Lot 104 of a 1989 plan, at the corner of Alexander Road and Islington Street.
The farm had belonged to Samuel Richardson, who died in 1796, and then passed to the minor sons of Joseph Richardson, late of Billerica, yeoman. In August 1796 Joseph and John Chapman Richardson chose Jacob Marshall of Tewksbury as their guardian, and in April 1798 the Supreme Judicial Court licensed him to sell their real estate. On June 14, 1798 Marshall sold to Joseph Gleason of Billerica, yeoman, for $1,305 "a farm situate in said Billerica formerly owned by Mr Samuel Richardson deceased situate on the southeast side of Shawshean river containing about eighty seven acres ... with the buildings standing and being thereon". It ran from a swamp white oak by Sears Cook's land to "Lubbers brook so called", by Capt. James Jaquith to the Wilmington line, and back along the river meadows, "allowance made for the road through said farm where it is now traveled", the road that became Alexander Road. So the farm and its buildings were already there in 1798, well before the 1852 date long given for the house.
Joseph Gleason, born in 1768, was a son of Deacon William Gleason of the College Farm across the river. In 1804 he added five acres of river meadow bought from Jonathan Beard of Wilmington, and over the next decades he bought more land on the Wilmington side, so that by his death the homestead measured about 100 acres. His will, written in 1847 when he was living in Burlington and proved in 1849, left the residue of his estate equally to his children Amira Buck, Susan W. Cutler, Joseph Gleason of Medford and George Gleason of Burlington.
On April 1, 1850 the widow Sarah Gleason and the heirs deeded "the homestead of the late Joseph Gleason containing one hundred acres more or less" to Asa G. Sheldon of Wilmington for $1,792, and Sheldon deeded it back the same day to George Gleason, a trader of Burlington. That paper transaction, recorded in 1852, is why the 1853 map names both men; Sheldon never held the farm in any real sense. George Gleason died intestate in 1858, and the farm, valued at $2,000, passed to his only child George Henry Gleason, who sold it in 1871 to Jonas Alexander. It stayed in the Alexander family, giving Alexander Road its name, until Mary C. Alexander sold it in 1927 to the L. C. Morang Co., which laid it out on paper as the Shawsheen Pines subdivision.
The house lot then shared the fortunes of the larger tract: a mortgage foreclosure in 1941, Billerica Wilmington Airways, Inc. from 1945, a bank foreclosure and sale to Joseph M. Linsey in 1954, and Linsey's long ownership until 1981, when he sold to Alexander Realty Trust. After a 1984 foreclosure the land passed to Alexander Realty Trust III, which in 1988 also took in the old Shawsheen Pines paper lots and then divided the land into industrial lots. The old house is recorded as removed in 1987. Lot 104, 61,569 square feet, was sold in 1989 for $380,000 to Nicholas Realty Trust, and the industrial building now at 71 Alexander Road dates from that time. The lot was sold under a mortgage foreclosure in 1996, to Amber Lane Investments LLC in 2009, and to 71 Alexander Road LLC in 2021.
