School Physician

The School Physician examined Billerica's school children, checked pupils returning after illness, and advised on contagious disease and school sanitation. Medical inspection of the public schools was required by state law in 1906, and the town first appropriated money for it in 1907. Dr. Maurice A. Buck, also a School Committee member, served until July 1, 1926, when a court ruling barred committee members from the post; Dr. Orland S. Marshall succeeded him and served until 1967, joined by Dr. Solomon G. Hajjar from 1952 until Hajjar's death in December 1966. Town reports list a school physician through 1983.
