Sewall Stearns was born in 1796 and married Lucretia Hill (b. 1807) in 1836. In 1849, Sewall died of typhus fever, leaving the Widow Stearns to be listed on the 1853 map. Lucretia married Dr. Josiah Bowers, and they occupied this house in 1860 along with Lucretia's youngest sister, Susanna Lane Hill. Dr. Bowers died in 1868.

Lucretia died in 1874, leaving the house to her sister, Susanna. Susanna died in 1894, although the 1889 map already shows the house as occupied by "Miss L. Hill".
