The Spaulding House stands on a lot of about an acre on the northwest side of Andover Road, beside the Billerica Congregational Church land. The ground was once part of the eleven-acre homestead of Capt. Josiah Bowers on "the northerly side of the Salem road," which passed after his death in 1824 through his heirs to Jonathan Gates and in 1834 to Ichabod G. Kimball. In 1875 Kimball made over "my homestead farm" to George W. Searles in return for his support, and from 1890 Searles sold it off in lots along Andover Street.
On September 17, 1895 Searles sold Andrew C. Spring of Somerville about four and a half acres "in the central part of said Billerica on the westerly side of Andover street," bounded by John E. Bull, E. W. Livingston, Ebenezer Baker and Sears J. Cook. Spring sold it to William A. Beers in 1910, and on May 3, 1911 Beers sold the same four and a half acres, with 105 feet on the street and no buildings named, to Edward Spaulding of Billerica. By December 29, 1911, when Spaulding mortgaged it for $800 to the Middlesex Co-operative Bank of Lowell, it was "a certain lot of land, with the buildings thereon": the shingled house was built in 1911.
After Edward Spaulding's death his children Evelen A. Spaulding, a dressmaker, and Leroy E. (Roy) Spaulding held the place as his heirs. On April 1, 1933 both conveyed their halves to Roy's wife, Edith M. Spaulding, a daughter of Frederick L. Mason of the Mason farm on Boston Road. Roy Spaulding, listed in 1931 as an automobile dealer, turned the land into a poultry farm. It advertised in the Howe High School yearbooks from 1940 as Spaulding's Poultry Farm and from 1945 as Roy Spaulding & Sons, run by Roy and his son Edward L. Spaulding, and by 1951 it was incorporated as Spaulding & Sons, Inc., with the poultry plant and the family house here at 34 Andover Road.
On January 7, 1954 Edith Spaulding mortgaged "the land, with the buildings thereon" to the Middlesex County National Bank of Everett for $85,000 owed by Roy, Edith and Edward Spaulding. The business failed that year: a creditor attached the partners' property for $100,000 in December 1954, the town took the land for unpaid taxes of 1956 and 1957, and on December 9, 1958 the bank foreclosed and bought the four and a half acres at its own sale for $9,000. A 1961 plan made for the bank divided the Spaulding lands into Parcels A to D. Parcel D, 43,560 square feet with the house, went in 1963 to the Dale Realty Trust and that year to a private owner. The 1973 survey of the Billerica historic district recalled that "the Spaulding family lived here throughout the first half of the 20th century" and that the chicken business "was quite lucrative." Since 1988 the house has been a group residence, owned by Concord House Hesed, Inc. and Hesed House, Inc. and since 1999 by Co-Nexus, Inc.
