The Everglades (1939 - 1983)
The Buccaneer (1983 - 1985) Jade Pacific Restaurant (2003 - ????) |
|
The Everglades was a restaurant and night spot at 770 Boston Road, at the corner of Intervale Road near Pinehurst. It stands on Lot D4 of the Riverdale land that Edgar P. Sellew, the surveyor who laid out Riverdale, had registered in the Land Court in 1917, and it was the Everglades from the late 1930s until the early 1980s. The building is still a restaurant.
The land was part of the farm of John Crosby, who held it south of the road to Burlington along the Shawsheen River until his mortgages were foreclosed in the 1860s. In 1875 Cornelius Sweetser of Saco, Maine, sold the Crosby lands to Ruel Carter of Woburn, Henry Sheldon of Wilmington and James T. Eames of North Reading, and in 1876 Sheldon and Eames released to Carter "about forty four acres" bounded east by the river and "southwesterly and southerly by the highway leading to Burlington." Carter's widow and heirs sold the 44 acres in 1881 to John Fuller of Boston, who in 1892 deeded them, "with the buildings thereon," to Olin L. Fuller of Billerica. In 1912 Olin L. Fuller sold Sellew 38.5 acres between Allen Road, Boston Road and the river, keeping the land to the west.
The Land Court decree of April 26, 1917, registered Sellew's title to Lots A to P of Riverdale. Lots D and E ran 306.70 feet along Boston Road, west by Olin L. Fuller and around by Intervale Road. Sellew divided Lot D several times, and on August 16, 1934, he drew plan 6051-E, setting off Lot D4, 150 by 300 feet between Intervale Road and a proposed road, which shows the lot empty. Lot D4 passed in December 1934 to Harry F. Hildreth, in March 1935 to Bessie L. DeLoid of Boston, and, after the town took it for the 1935 taxes and released it, in December 1938 to Esther M. Corvi, wife of Frank Corvi. The restaurant went up in those years: nothing stood here in the directories of 1931 and 1932, but the Howe High School yearbook of 1939 carried "Compliments of The Everglades," and in January 1939 Mrs. Corvi took the land behind it, Lot D5, giving her address as "c/o Everglades."
The Corvis ran the Everglades through the 1940s, Esther M. Corvi as proprietor and Frank Corvi as chef, and in 1941 they deeded Lot D4 to The Everglades Inc. In 1949 Lot D5 went to John J. and Sarah M. Brogna of North Woburn, and the Brognas ran the restaurant from about 1950, with Michael Brogna as president and John Brogna as treasurer, advertising "Fine Italian & American Foods" in the high school yearbooks into the 1970s. The rear land, by then Lot 8 on plan 6051-J (1965), was registered to The Everglades, Inc. in 1976, and in 1980 both lots went to Sacco's Everglades Realty Trust. The Everglades was still one of the places where town meeting warrants were posted in 1982.
From about 1982 private owners held the property, and by 1983 it was The Buccaneer; a mortgagee's sale followed in 1986. Fung Ming Realty Inc. bought it in 1987, and the Jade Pacific restaurant was there by 2003 and still in the 2020s. In 2017 the Commonwealth registered an order of taking "to alter state highway" for the rebuilding of Boston Road, and in 2019 the property was sold to JP Holdings RE, Inc.
