Thomas Allen House
The Thomas Allen House stood on the west side of the Salem road at its junction with Baldwin Road in East Billerica, the spot the town reports of the early 1900s call "Page's Corner". It is the "E. Page" house of the 1853 Walling map, the home of Ebenezer Page, but the house was already old when he bought it. Its lot, about twelve or thirteen acres, can be followed in the deeds from 1791, when it first appears with buildings on it, until a builder cut the farm into house lots in 1964.
The earliest record is a mortgage of April 18, 1791, by which Thomas Allen of Billerica, yeoman, pledged to his neighbor Asa Patten "about twelve acres with the Buildings thereon", bounded east on "the highway leading from Fox hill to Shawshean River Bridge", south on Samuel Baldwin and west on Joseph Kendall, "reserving a Priviledge for Joseph Kendall to pass and repass through said Land to his Land as usual he putting up bars". Two years earlier Allen had sold Patten the twenty acres just north of it, bounding that sale on "my own land". Thomas was a son of Samuel Allen, whose will of 1775 divided the family homestead on the east side of the road between Thomas and his brother Jeremiah. How Thomas came by the lot west of the road has not been found.
In 1819 Jeremiah Allen, "gentleman", quitclaimed the lot to Henry Allen for $450 as "about thirteen acres more or less with the buildings thereon standing", still describing it by "the mortgage deed of Thomas Allen to Asa Pattin". Henry sold it the next February to Ezra Allen for $1,250, with the ten-acre "Parsons lot" across the road. Ezra moved to Whiting, Maine, and on March 15, 1827, sold both pieces for $800 to Ebenezer Page of Tewksbury, yeoman, reserving once more to "the Kendall family" their "ancient right of passing and repassing through the first mentioned lot to their field by closing the gates or bars". In 1828 Page added the forty acres behind the house lot, bought from the administrator of Cyrus Kendall.
Ebenezer Page farmed here for thirty-five years. On September 2, 1862, he deeded the thirteen acres and the forty acres to "my son James Page" for $1,500, taking back a mortgage, and made his will the same day. James Page was still living at the fork in 1883, when Hazen placed the old Second Division rangeway at "the present fork in the roads where Mr. James Page lives", and the junction kept his family's name for decades. The farm passed under the will of Martha F. Page to Anne M. P. Hall, Mabel H. Hall and Lucy Hall Hyde, who sold it in 1918 to John and Annie Thomas of Billerica.
The Thomases sold in 1927 to Alphonse Gaidamovich, who granted a strip for a power line in 1928, sold to John Wortowik of Boston in 1929 and foreclosed his own purchase-money mortgage in 1930 at an auction "upon the premises", buying it in for his wife Annie. After a round trip through Ona Kassell in 1938, the Gaidamoviches sold the two parcels "with the buildings thereon" in 1947 to John D. Cooke and Gerard Bruno, who resold in January 1948 to James H. and Marie E. Finney "of Salem Road, East Billerica". The old house is recorded as taken down in 1939 and replaced by the present Cape, which the assessor dates to about 1940.
In 1963 the Finneys sold the back twenty-five acres to the Town as the site of the Kennedy School, and in May 1964 they sold the rest to M and T Construction Corporation, which laid out the Green Acre Farms subdivision (Plan Book 100 Plan 103). The plan shows the house on Lot 1, at the corner of Salem and Baldwin Roads, and in January 1965 the builder sold Lot 1, 17,370 square feet "with the buildings thereon", to a private owner. The lot, now 222 Baldwin Road, has changed hands privately several times since.
