Thomas Patten was born on October 22, 1701, the eldest son of Sergeant Thomas Patten (1666-1752) and his wife Hannah Foster, and a grandson of Thomas Patten of the Content Brook saw mill. He married Hannah Kittredge, a daughter of Deacon Daniel Kittredge, and their daughter Hannah was born on April 17, 1732.
He died on September 16, 1733, aged 31, while his father was still living. The town clerk recorded him as "Thomas Ters" (tertius, the third), to tell him from his father and from his cousin Thomas Patten Jr., the cooper; his gravestone in the Old South Cemetery calls him Thomas Pattin Jr. No deed or probate record of his own has been found.
