Thomas Rogers Homestead
Thomas Rogers Homestead
| Also Known As | McGlone Homestead |
| Address | 11 Town Farm Ln |
| Built | 1674 |
| Demolished | 1835 |
| Owners | Nathan Mears (1818 - 1828) |
| Other Lot Structures | McGlone Homestead (1804 - 1916) |
The Thomas Rogers Place was a farm of about sixty acres at the north end of town, between the road to Bradley's Ferry (now High Street) and the Concord River, with the lane to the town's poor farm (now Town Farm Lane) running through it. The farmhouse stood on its own lot of about 131 1/2 square rods, "enclosed with a stone wall," on the north side of the lane. The same walls still surround the lot at 11 Town Farm Lane.
The Thomas Rogers who gave the place its name was a later member of the Rogers family of North Billerica, a son of Samuel Rogers who died in 1804, and not the Thomas Rogers who was killed in the raid of 1695 and lived in what is now North Billerica village. The age of the house is not known. After Thomas's death, his son Jonathan Pollard Rogers in 1815 released to the widow Olive Barrett all the land "which belonged to my late father Thomas Rogers." In 1818 Olive Barrett, Samuel Rogers of Boston and Olive W. Rogers sold the "homested farm ... with all the buildings thereon" to Nathan Mears, a North Billerica trader, for $1,000. The deed describes the road lot running "westerly by a lane as the wall now stands," the walled house lot, and the land running to the river, and it shows that the lane already led to a town farm next door by 1818.
Nathan Mears died by 1832, and on March 20 of that year the guardians of his five minor children sold "his Thomas Rogers' Place with the buildings thereon" at auction on the premises to Michael McGlone of Lowell for $1,347.19, including the walled lot "on which stands the dwelling house" and a ten acre "Dam Swamp." The farm stayed with the McGlone family for eighty years and became known as the McGlone Homestead. After Mary McGlone died without a will, her seven heirs sold their shares, and the deeds of 1909 and 1912 still describe the walled house lot "just northerly" of the road lot, "upon the opposite side of the road separating the two." A Probate Court partition in 1913 sold the house lot as "Lot Two," and in 1916 it went to Lars J. Johnson as "the McGlone homestead lot."
The dwelling was always on the walled lot north of the lane, so the Rogers house and the McGlone homestead were probably the same building. The house now on the lot is dated to about 1920. The walled lot passed from Roy A. Merrill to Donald J. and Judith R. Gadbois in 1966, still described as "about 131 1/2 square rods enclosed by a stone wall known as the McGlone Homestead Lot," and their 2004 survey, "Plan of Land in Billerica, Mass., Town Farm Lane," shows the walls on every side of Lot A, 11 Town Farm Lane.

Administration granted to the widow Abigail Aug. 15, 1736. The inventory (Jan. 5, 1737) lists "the Homestead containing about eighty five acres ... bounded easterly by the highway that leads to Waymesset, southerly on land of William Kidder, westerly on Concord River, north by the land of John Leavestone and an old Mansion house thereon standing and a barn," a 48-acre lot by John Leavestone, and two rights in the new township of Nechewage. Distribution Feb. 9, 1738: to Thomas Rogers only "one lot or right in a new township called Nechewage," the right of Thomas Farmer No. 57; to Timothy the other Nechewage lot; and to Zebediah and Samuel "the remainder of lands and buildings in Billerica and Tewksbury besides the widows thirds," confirmed in 1746. The Rogers homestead of 1737 lay north of the Kidders, so Thomas Rogers's later corner farm south of the Kidders did not come to him from his father.

Thomas Rogers of Billerica, yeoman, son of Samuel Rogers, died intestate in 1804; his widow Olive declined to administer because "the children are all minors," and Josiah Rogers, his cousin and neighbor, was appointed June 6, 1804. The inventory of Sept. 17, 1804 begins with "The homestead of said deceased situated in said Billerica containing about fifty acres of land, with the buildings thereon," $1,700, besides outlying lots in Tewksbury and Chelmsford, several of which were sold at vendue in 1805 to pay debts. The dower commissioners (Oliver Crosby, Josiah Rogers, Josiah B. Richardson) appraised the homestead in parcels, among them the New Pasture "beginning at the corner by a lane," the river lot from "a black oak tree marked" to "a maple tree marked" and the Concord River, and "The house lot, being about one acre and a half quarter, bounded beginning at the southeast corner at the road leading to the house thence westerly on said road to a corner of a cross wall, thence north by said wall to land of the said Josiah Rogers, thence easterly on said Josiah Rogers to a wall, thence south by said wall," with "a dwelling house" ($250) and "the barn" ($200). On Nov. 4, 1805 they set off to Olive "the westerly part of the dwelling house from the center of the front door directly through the center of the kitchen fire place," part of the barn and outlying lots; the report was allowed Dec. 14, 1810.
