Town Auditor

The Town Auditors were three officers elected each year at the annual town meeting. Under the town by-laws they examined the books and accounts of every officer and committee entrusted with the receipt, custody or spending of town money, checked the bills and vouchers paid by the treasury, and reported to the town each year on their correctness. The earliest auditors named in the surviving town reports audited the accounts of 1884-85. In 1917 the town accepted Chapter 624 of the Acts of 1910, hired a Town Accountant and installed the state system of accounting, and the elected auditors were then abolished; the last board was chosen in March 1918.
