In 1797, with the new country trying to separate Church and State, the Third Meetinghouse on the Common was deconstructed and many of its materials were used to build this secular hall and schoolhouse east of the common, south of Andover Road. At the same time, the new First Parish was constructed across the Common, where it still stands today.

In 1844, the town wanted a better hall in which to conduct business, so this building was sold to private hands. It was used as a Grand Army of the Republic Hall and store until 1877, when it burned down with the adjacent hotel at the corner of Andover and Boston Road.
