Also Known As Herbert Wright - Sweatt House
Address 79 Gray St
MACRIS ID BIL.141
Built 1846

William Gray was born in Tewksbury in 1792 and became a successful merchant. In 1846, he married Abigail Allen Richardson who was thirty years his junior. The house was built beside the home of Abigail's father, John Richardson.

This beautifully built house had two marble fireplaces and had corridors upstairs and downstairs, running the length of the house to provide passage for servants and to prevent any bother to members of the family.

After William Gray's death, Abigail and her daughters moved away and only used the property sparingly. The house sold in 1904 to Herbert Wright and again sold in 1912 to the Sweatt family. They and their relatives, the Websters, kept the property until 1972.

In the late 1970s, a serious fire destroyed the adjoining barn and the kitchen, and caused considerable damage to the interior.
