William H. Patten House (Gray Street)
William H. Patten House
| Also Known As | David Sanborn / Patrick McAteer House |
| Address | 86 Gray St |
| MACRIS ID | BIL.140 |
| Built | 1870 |
Built by Patrick McAteer in 1870, the so-called Sanborn House was sold almost immediately to William Patten, son of Aaron Pattern who ran the saw mill in the nearby village of Pattenville. It is probably that the adjoining street, Patten Road, was so named because of this.
In 1892, William Patten sold to David Sanbor, a Civil War veteran. David and Martha Sanborn had two sons - Edgar who had mental health problems and was committed to an asylum; and Arthur, a writer, Biblical scholar and scientific gardener. Arthur wrote two books and many articles and maintained a well-stocked library which became a resource to neighborhood students.
When Arthur Sanborn retired about 1940 to live in Boston near the Boston Public Library, he sold the property to a neighbor, Robert Wright, who almost immediately sold to Leslie and Mildred Trevett.
