William Thayer

William Thayer was a music teacher in the Billerica public schools for 35 years, until he retired in 2004, and the director of the town's middle school bands. At the Annual Fall Town Meeting of October 3, 1995, in the Maurice A. Buck Memorial Auditorium, the combined Middle School Bands under his direction gave a musical presentation after the invocation and closed their program with the Star Spangled Banner. In the early 2000s the Middle School Wind Ensemble under his direction provided the music each June for the annual Flag Day ceremony of the Veterans' Services department, held for pupils of the elementary schools, at which the Billerica Lodge of Elks presented the history of the American flag; the 2001 ceremony was held on the Billerica Common, and the department's reports for 2001 through 2004 all name him as the ensemble's director. The school department's list of retirements for 2003-2004 includes William Thayer among the teachers, with 35 years of service.
