Charles W. Lund

Charles W. Lund was a blacksmith in Billerica Centre in the 1870s, 1880s and early 1890s. He entered the Howe School in 1867, and in 1876 he married Henrietta Green, who had graduated from the school in 1872. In June 1876 Mark Lund sold him for $300 Lot 2 of the old Bowers homestead on the west side of Boston Road just south of the Centre, one acre and 54 rods, which Mark Lund had bought from the town and the Baptist church in 1871. Charles built at once: in November 1876 he mortgaged the lot as "a certain parcel of land with a new house and barn thereon". It is the Charles Lund House at 433 Boston Road.

Hazen's list of the voters of Billerica in 1880 includes him. The town reports of the 1880s and early 1890s pay C. W. Lund for blacksmithing, shoeing and repairs, for sharpening picks and drills for the highways, for a two-horse cart in 1887, and in 1891 for labor on the common fence, rests for bridge rails and a grate for a culvert. On October 18, 1884 he and Henrietta sold the house for $2,450 to William H. Patten. The same month he bought from George W. and Mary E. Gragg, for $800, the corner lot on Boston Road and Charnstaffe Lane "with the buildings thereon", the site of the Lund Building, together with Mary Cole's quarter acre across the lane. He sold the corner in December 1892 to George P. Greenwood for $850.

He was one of the twenty-five charter members of Talbot Lodge No. 41 of the New England Order of Protection, founded on June 20, 1888, and was still named among its twelve surviving charter members in 1913, when the list gave his home as Billerica. The 1901 Lowell directory noted that he had moved to Everett.
