Jacob Burt House
Jacob Burt House
The house known from the 1974 survey as the J. Burtt House stood on the east side of the old Middlesex Turnpike in South Billerica, at what is now 430 Middlesex Turnpike, between farms of the Jaquith family. It was a small wood-shingled house close to the road. It was torn down in 1973, after a new house had been built behind it on the same lot.
The deeds show that the house was built in 1851 or 1852 by Ira N. Hannaford. In April 1851 Benjamin L. Judkins sold him about three acres on the turnpike for $500, with no buildings mentioned, bounded by land of Susan Jaquith and by Franklin Jaquith's wall. By 1852 Hannaford's mortgage to Francis E. Richardson covered the land "together with the buildings thereon", and in December 1852 Hannaford sold it back to Judkins. Judkins then sold the house and land for $400 to Joseph A. Burt, who had been appointed postmaster at North Billerica in January 1852; he is the "J. Burt" whose name is on the 1853 map. The deeds of Jacob Burt, whose name the house has carried, are all for land in Tewksbury and Wilmington. Joseph A. Burt sold the place in December 1854 to Henry B. Pingree, a laborer, who sold it back to Judkins in 1855.
In February 1856 Judkins sold the tract to Martin Lane, who added three more acres at the road to the Widow French's gate in 1862. The 1875 and 1889 maps mark the house "M. Lane". In 1871 Lane also bought the larger Lane Homestead on the road to Middle Bridge. He died on 30 December 1905 at the age of 77. Through his estate and that of his wife Bridget, the property passed to their children, and in 1917 his daughters Annie Lane Riordon and Catherine Lane Kennelly released their shares to Mary E. Lane.
Mary E. Lane sold both parcels to John Pavey in 1919. Pavey sold them in 1929 to Thomas and Sarah Long of Somerville, who sold to David A. Long of Billerica in 1931. In 1941 David A. and Ada E. Long and the other heirs of Sarah Long sold the place "with the buildings thereon" to Howard J. and Ida M. Crouse. After Howard Crouse died in 1949, Ida M. Crouse sold a strip of 48,756 square feet across the back of the land to the Lowell Electric Light Corporation for a power line in 1955. In 1958 her conservator sold the rest to private owners, who built the present house behind the old one in 1972 and took the old house down the next year.
